Default New to RD with a few questions

I just picked up an X50 blue unit and would like some guidance. I live in Long Island, New York and will be using the RD for travel on the Long Island expressway.

    1. Which bands are the most common used by police on this highway?

    2. Should I activate POP on my unit?

    3. Is Laser a major concern in this area?

    Thanks

I also own the x50 blue.

As far as I see.. New York uses bascially everything :[

New York - KA, K, Laser, Airborn VASCAR, POP, unmarked, X

Activating POP won't harm you, you might even get an alert. You shouldn't have to worry about the K, X, and Ka or VASCAR. But watch out for laser.. especially up there, it's a killer.

So I guess your saying activate all bands?

By the way how can I get one of those cool "blue" signature banners?

Basically yes. I would probly leave POP off anyway, but maybe we should find someone who lives in NY to tell you that, But I'd def. leave the others on.

    ^ +1.

Enabling POP may save you, but it's also just as likely to make you crazy from the falsing, or even make you start to lose-faith in your detector due to said falsing.

You have to judge the risk-to-benefit ratio yourself. It's a hard call to make.

If you've seen some of my past posts about POP, you'll understand where this difficulty lies:

I'm torn, each and every day, between turning off POP and keeping it on.... And with every passing day, I'm more and more inclined to turn it off.....

Well I know one thing. After 3 days of using the X50, no other band seems to present more false alerts for my unit than X. This band should be called the shopping center detector. Despite what was stated earlier i'm giving serious consideration to turning off X band. I drove about 50 miles both ways with POP activated on the expressway today and most of the false pos were by far X band. I did not get any POP hits. I got a small number of K hits from road work signs (I think) and one very strange Laser alert. When this alert sounded I slowed to 55 but was not able to locate a cop in any direction. None of the cars in my lane were pulled over. This particular stretch of highway is pretty mush devoid of any buildings. I wonder what set it off? Anyway, I think X band will be the first to go.

I completly agree with the shopping center detector. I have so many around here and it always falses x. and some are k. I could actually turn X off myself, but I got my first and only REAL X alert a few weeks ago so I'm going to see if I can get another.
If there are buildings where you'll be, sure turn off X.
And if your POP wont false, just turn it off.
But be careful of the laser!

Does the Laser alert I described sound like a false to you? Why should I turn of POP if it does not false?

If you didn't see the cop ahead or anything, Probly was a false, but I know laser is used a lot in NY. Just leave POP on, but im sure they wont be using it. If you get a false, then just turn it off.

Yeah, what your saying about the use of lasers in NY is true. I'm even considering investing in a ZR3 to protect myself.
