Default X50 spec meter with Ka encounter

Lately I have been using spec meter to try to determine what brand of Ka guns are being used along my commute to/from work. My question is this: When coming across a CO Ka signal near 35.5XX, why does the display change to something near 33.7XX just as the LEO passes traveling in the opposite direction? Both Kustom Eagle series and MPH units are used here. This topic was touched on in the past by search, but I didn't see a clear answer. X50 rev 5.

It would seem that you are passing two different LEOs with two different radar makes. 35.5 seems to be the stronger signal, then as the LEO passes and his signal fades, the now more powerful 33.7 "takes over" the spec display since it is now the stronger signal.

Kinnda like what happened this weekend to me. I started to get a 34.6XX signal going down the road. As it got to full strength, I saw the LEO. When he passed, the signal was still at full strength and the frequency swtiched to 34.7XX. It was another LEO that was traveling a couple car lengths behind. As he passed, the signal strength went down.

That is possible. However, this always occurs in the same fasion when encountering a specific agencies units with CO 35.5 during the ramp up. That unit being the only one around.

What you've encountered in Ka band was a kustom radar unit. For some reason, the kustom units would show this frequecies 35.5 and 33.7 or 33.9(mostly). When you put it in expert mode, you'll get 2 bogeys instead of one. The X50 only shows 2 bogeys with Kustom Ka band units. The decaturs won't cause the X50 to show double bogey.

The State Highway Patrol here use Kustom KA radar units and I've noticed the Freq change and Double bogeys as well.

I think that in most cases this is simply the detector "ghosting" an extra bogie in the presence of a strong signal.

Jim, just wondered why it only happens with the kustom units. The stalkers, decaturs and MPH don't show this phenomenon even at point blank range. Just wondered why there is a shift of frequency and band sometimes Ka and K band.
