Will Escort service the unit?
Get an X50, it is a great detector. A lot easier to program when installed high Vs. The RX-65.
A lot of people also talk about the whistlers being a good unit.
Without a serial number, most likely Escort will not service the unit. I am not 100% sure on this though since I never have had to send in a unit without a serial.
Buying used off of e-bay doesn't necessarily mean you'll automatically have to send it in for the tune up. Belscorts can't really be "updated" as it's pointless to send in a unit unless there are frequent self cal messages or the 'Service Required' message. I've bought a couple of good detectors off of e-bay that work just fine...it's just depends on what kind of unit you get and how well the previous owner has taken care of it.
As for posting e-bay numbers I think rule 5 sums it up pretty much:
5. No linking to ebay auctions, period. This includes posting auction numbers and dealer names.
Use your best judgement. If you think it's worth to save the $70-100 buying used and take the risk then go for e-bay. If you'd like to have the reassurance and peace of mind buying new gives you, then by all means buy new.
Like I said, I was pretty much torn where to get my X50 until I finally made up my mind to get a Rev 5. They stopped making the Rev 5's sometime later in 2006 I think.

Please, Please, Please do not buy a so called new unit off eBay. The 30 bucks you save will bite you in the arse later when your warranty-less RD fails in 6 months.
Save up and get it new Direct or from an Authorized dealer.
I know with a Valentine One you cannot even buy accessories like a cord or window mount for your detector without a serial number. When I ordered accessories for the V1 I just bought on ebay they made me give them a serial number before they would ship anything. After I emailed them a serial number they replied with a thank you and let me know the detector had now been registered in my name. I think this is so they do not sell parts for V1's that have been reported stolen.
Whats rev 5?
I think I'm going to order it through Escort on monday, this way I get the latest version.
Is there a way I can get any discount or does everyone sell it for $339 + shipping?
My only conserns are getting it by thursday, as I have to make a long trip and getting the latest version.
