Default Very interesting 9500ix laser "save" today

It seems radar detectors are considered essentially useless against laser, but what happened today will make me rethink that assumption. I was headed west on the 90 into Marina del Rey this afternoon and my 9500ix's laser warning went off, while it was sitting on my lap! (I was in the process of taking it down...). I was really surprised, picked it up and pointed it out the windshield at dash height. I was doing 70-ish and estimate that the laser alert sounded for 6 to 7 seconds straight, and going around the first curve that presented itself...there was CHP. So, no line of sight for a while, RD down below the dash, and an unwavering detection of laser. I'm really, really impressed!

That's almost impossible. Do you have any LCD screens in your car?

That's what I would have thought. No light sources in the car, the OBC/nav display was turned off.

Forget the laser. Kinda dangerous taking the radar detector down while doing 70mph. Ya think !!

^^ My old Bel 945 would false laser in front of my CD slot, the escorts (at least mine) don't do that.

My 9500ix would not go off on laser with GPD blasting away with an Ultralyte. That was my only complaint with the ix, that the laser sensativity seemed to be lacking.

WHAT? LED's will cause the xi to pop? I'm preparing to buy the "ci" and I need to know if this also applies. Sorry, this may considered a hijack although maybe not. Reason: I have 2007 Passat and there are factory LED's that shoot down from the overhead light cluster but maybe it's just if the LED is hitting the sensor itself? Yes, I am new...

The ci's laser sensors are the ZR4 heads. These heads are mounted on the front and rear of the vehicle, not in the cabin. Your LED's should not present a problem. The ZR4 heads are quite sensative and do false sometimes. They also typically alert before either my V1 or the LI goes off. With the increased sensativity of the ZR4 heads you may get some false alerts, but with laser better safe than sorry in my opinion.

So much for the "xi" option in my LED Passat; glad I'm opting for the "ci". Interesting just the same, since I thought the "Li" system was somehow superior with respect to Laser detection. Then again, I thought the ZR4’s were only line-of-sight sensitive. BTW: Is there a dedicated switch to cancel (turn-off) the ZR4’s once they alert?

The LI is certainly a superior laser jammer, but the ZR4s might be slightly more sensitive to the receive portion of the process, but certainly not to the transmit portion of laser jamming. My guess is that the LI is actually just slightly later to warn the driver to the threat than the ZR4s are, but both systems detect the threat just as well.

Hitting the 9500ci's mute button twice disables the ZR4s temporarily. This allows the LEO to attain your new and improved speed once you've slowed down to avoid any problems that might be caused by a LEO thinking he was jammed.
