I have bought so many used I can't count them all. Very few problems. If you buy an X50 used, in the box, with all accessories, it's a damn good chance it's not stolen. Make sure it has a serial number on it.

IF there is a problem with an X50, send it to Escort for $59.95, repaired, new Smartcord and windshield mount, and 6 month warranty. I've done it many times and plan to continue. I've got an M4 X50 right now with a dead display. Once I have it repaired, I'll have less than $90 in it. That's cheaper than a Cobra!

I recently bought an M4 X50 new in the box for $125, so there are bargains out there, you just gotta shake the trees.

What would be a good backup for that in the $100-$250 range?
Another great detectors are Whistler Pro 78 or a Whistler xtr-695 in that price range. Check out my videos of the 78 plenty of time to slow down !

alliance25 That's a big city you live in compared to where I grew up. I couldn’t do something at one end of town, without everyone talking about it by the time I got to the other. And no, there were no cell phones back then (cops either). POP 325

Good luck with your RD decision!

And alliance25, also consider in addition to primehifi's comments that Bel/Escort has seriously tweaked their radar detection algorithms during the past several months. What this means is that, now, their RDs can detect extremely short instant-on (I/O) bursts of radar from police radar guns — bursts lasting as short as around 1/4 of a second — and without causing an increase in false alerts. Thus, my simple rule when buying any radar detector:

ALWAYS BUY NEW FROM AN AUTHORIZED DEALER OR DIRECTLY FROM THE MANUFACTURER.

Thats good news. When i owned my x50 i would always be scared i would miss I/O shots. 2 of my friends had x50's and got tickets from Tx DPS 34.7 with no alerts what so ever. The officer even told them it was Instant on and it said radar on there tickets. Also i was on a road trip and i noticed a guy passed me with a x50 and 2 miles ahead a trooper got him. Well i caught up to him at a gas station and i asked him if he got a ticket he said no warning for 77 but he said his detector never went off. My detector went off on Ka band and sure enough he was pulled over ahead. I told him he got you with radar cause mine went off on Ka band.

Thanks for all the input. I bought the x50 today. It's used but it was bought in february of 2008 at bestbuy.com. Sounds legit. The only thing I picked up around here was K alert and Ka one time. From what I heard this detector has really good K range. Hope that's right.

Around the corner, over the hill, anything, it sucks and it falses more than other people talk about my speed when riding with me. But i've got my eyes on a used 8500 x50. How good is the range? To get to my house I have to drive on a 3 mile stretch of highway. Will this detector keep my out of the courthouse? Or am I going to have to put an attorney in my fav 5?

By "the game", do you mean radar detectors, or the English language?

If they're stupid, the x50 will keep you out of trouble. If they're not as stupid as you think, and you drive the way it sounds, no radar detector is going to keep you out of trouble. The best RD in the world won't save you from instant-on radar. These are not cop detectors. They are only radar detectors. And chronic hyper-speeders deserve what they get.

Question - in a small town, don't/doesn't the cop(s) eventually notice you have an RD and then just start pulling you over whether you were speeding or not?
