Nothing in the $105 range new will compare to an updated/fixed 8500.
That's exactly how I obtained my 8500 (non-x50). Purchased it on ebay "untested" for $30 shipped. Came with just the detector itself. Of course it had been fried in the sun as all it did was laser false no matter what, sent it in to Escort they repaired it and also included a mount, 4 suctions cups, and a red smart cord. (Pretty much a brand new unit once you get it back)

    Can't beat that at all.

As long as it hasn't been tampered with and still has a serial number, I doubt Escort will turn you away. Heck, I'm sure they'd still persuade you to "trade" it in for $50 credit towards a new purchase before repairing it... they tried to get me to trade it in, told them it wasn't gonna happen.

from experience I can tell you its not worth d!ckn around with used detectors...in the end its a hassle, and youre never as confident as you are if its new.
the thing is, its not like its a used TV or something similar that you can SEE if everything is working as it should. Even if something is slightly wrong with the detector, you may not be able to tell, but your sensitivity may not be up to snuff etc.

Buy no RD and get a ticket = $500
    Buy sh*tty RD and get a ticket = $600
    Buy a good RD = $300

Don't ever speed or buy an RD = $0

[okay, you can still get a ticket with the best RD ever made but you get the point]

Do whatever the hell you want, but unless you are an engineer or something of the like you are not going to know what you are trusting your driving record to.

I know what you're saying, which is why I recommended that he send it in to Escort anyway. Obviously a $25 [Escort] detector has more issues than a blown speaker.

Here's my report from when I got my 8500 repaired:

Escort makes sure it pasts all test before returning it... if you don't trust them with $69 how can you spend $299+ on a new unit.

Call I forgot how much it was... $55 or &65ish i think... it may have gone up now though, since their RD's jumped in price.

Say $75, give or take 10 to be on the safer side, but again, I would advise agaibst what you are thinking about here.
