    Default Redline Review

I've been testing the new Escort Redline radar detector for the past month.

I've driven with it across the southwest, the northeast (including New Jersey) and now we are enroute to Sturgis SD for the rally.

So far it's an awesome unit on range!!!!

At SML the Redline beat out the V1 on the long range test

Today on I-40 the Redline sniffed out two K band photo enforcement vans 100 feet before the V1 alerted and alerted to a DPS trooper using Ka 1000 feet before the V1 alerted.

Today the V1 only beat out the Redline on one alert by milliseconds in Phx during a brief encounter with a Ka instant on alert.

These next 10 days I'll be testing the unit along side the V1 and the STi-r, logging over 3000 more miles!!!!!

Follow me on twitter: Radarroy or Facebook, roy.reyer as I post about these encounters. Have a photo of the Redline now on my facebook!!!

    Nice!

Have you confirmed that the V1 and Redline aren't interfering with one another? How far apart do you have them?

Even a stealth RD could cause interference to another RD in very close proximity, like when side by side on a windshield. And the V1, being "leaky" could be affecting the Redline's performance some.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

So, in some of your encounters, you are saying the Redline is on par with the Valentine 1 or vice-versa.

So, what you are saying is the Redline is on par with the Valentine 1...

    Interesting observation, Roy.

The line above that says it beats the V1, significantly on 2 encounters for him. (1000ft is a long-way in my book for real-world).

With that said: Escort KNOWS that Roy would be testing it and that he will be reporting his findings... so what does this tell me?

It tells me that he likely got a 'HOT' in-house non-production unit... and we will not see results this significant, in my book this can only go down-hill from here.

EDIT: Thank you Roy for all this info, and I will be following this review and story by you, but until I can confirm that its not a 'Hot' unit they gave you (unless you got to randomly select it)... I cannot hold my breath too much...

How is 100 feet significant? Especially at speed, sounds more like it edged it out.

Certainly a 1000 feet is considerable (depending on terrain), but 100 feet? At 55mph, I believe closure rate is on order of 85fps, if my calcs are right.

I've observed differences between early models and production models from just about every vendor I've tested/reviewed in the real-world. Shipping production models or, at least, early-shipping production models will tell the real-story. I am keeping my fingers crossed, though. But, remember, the initial ZR4 announcement...

Speaking of reviews, AirMoore, from someone who pioneered the style Roy appears to now be "borrowing," you may find this perspective, interesting.

He said 100 (one hundred) feet, not 1000 (one thousand) feet.

100 feet is about one second. I wouldn't call that significant.

100ft for a photo-van isn't too shabby, and 1,000ft for your average Ka encounter...

Stealth and VG can't read anymore?

The second part of my remark was too harsh on SS VG...

Isn't the V1 only getting 400-500ft (Max) warnings on these vans? Which would mean 100ft is exceptional. (Nearly 25% Better).

Again though, I trust Roy 100% with his review I do NOT, however, trust that Escort would give Roy a unit unless they knew it was the exceptional child of the Redline series... in other words, unless Roy can say he got to hand-pick his unit randomly and not given to him by Escort, these results hold little water.

With the above said, even factoring this in, the results still seem impressive, and if for some reason the Redline can keep these numbers up... on production units, this might just make up for its major pitfalls.

That 1,000 feet on Ka has me interested .... if the independent tests bear that out I'll get one for sure.

Even the 1000 foot report is immediately followed by a report of the V1 beating the Redline on Ka. 1000 feet is less than 2/10ths of a mile, which is all within the usual margin of error. You can get 3/10ths of a mile difference between two identical detectors from the same date of manufacture.

Nothing below half a mile is significant to me. And even then, it's not worth giving up features or paying a Ben Franklin for.
