I think that on Autoscan you loose sensativity on Ka and K. I have a cop in my town that drives around with his radar on all the time. I have 2 other rd's and the autoscan really seems to affect reaction time and distance sensativity. I will be driving with it on Highway for a while and then I wil look for the difference.
My V1 I use on Logitec mode, or Half and L and it seems to discern the falsing well. My X50 in the computer mode (forgot the name) seemed to do fine. I believe that I can really tell a difference with the RX65. It shouldn't be that big of a difference.
On my 985, Autoscan lowers the sensitivity way too much for my liking. And, at least on my 985, it affects all the radar bands.

i must say i agree. i dont like how quiet my 995 becomes on autoscan. however, even with other people in the car, i still turn it on highway mode when i get on the freeway. i hardly ever see traps in town and i just keep up with traffic so i shouldn't be in danger of any ticketsOriginally Posted by GTO_04
It is my understanding once explained to me/read it somewhere, that Autoscan works by way of judging the amount of frequencies polluting the airways in order to judge if you are in a populated metropolitan area with alot of false signals, or in a rural area (highway) with less interference. The autoscan mode adjust the sensitivity of the X and K bands only.
On my Bel985
City X mode -only applies a filter on X band only, lowering the sensitivity
City All mode -applies filter on X and K band only, lowering the sensitivity, also after initial alert full mute is applied only showing visual alert up to a certain threshold, above the threashold value (I believe #4) then the audio alert is heard again.
Autoscan mode -the detector listens to the "pollution" of radio frequencies in the area and makes a determination if you are in a metropolatan area, or a rural area (highway) and adjusts sensitivity accordingly, but again, no one has gotten specific information if it applies to X band and/or K band.
It is highly doubtfull that Ka is filtered, over three years running I have never seen a Ka false, always verified the LEO. I don't think the manufacture would hinder Ka sensitivity. I believe Autoscan adjust X and K only, but not with threshold audio levels. All of what I have said I have experienced first hand with my detector. Autoscan does seem to rarely false, seems "smarter" determining a real threat.
Highway mode I do see more falses appear more easily at weak level 1 as compared to Autoscan although virtually falses, does begin to alert at low level 2 too.
I like Autoscan mode, and have confidence in it to give me warning ahead of time, I do switch to Highway mode for max sensitivity for highway travel. Recently have been just using Highway mode exclusively, not because Autoscan seems to be hindering performance, but just to have the maximum possible, that extra 2-4 seconds, as I have a older detector, and want the best bet of picking up a LEO using POP (for when he does switch to instant on).
One last note
I find autoscan to false less than with city or city all mode, can't explain it, but to me it seems like city modes don't really do anything except for city all which fully mutes the weak signal after initial audio alert, and then contiues visual alert until it breaches the level 4 threshold and agains begins beeping.
I have X band disabled because it is not allowed in the state of FLorida however, I personaly seen X band used on University of Ganensville campus police and pulling people over issueing a citation so watch out (I have no comprehension how that ticket stands in a court of law, campus police have leeway in their own area so again just dont spped on campus, not even worth trying to win the cat and mouse game, besides its only 25 and they will notice you faster than everyone else and will give you a ticket. Back to what I was initially saying ,lucky us we dont have to worry about X band, so its just the very few K band falses, and one can easily determine a real threat as false seem to be weak under level 4, while real threats increase to full strength.
I have been running my RX65 on Highway for a week or so. It seems to give me a second or two more reaction time. I have picked up a little more falsing, but not a lot. I am still not sold on using highway all the time yet. ( I obviously change to city when in the city) Hopefully the new STi is great and I will go on to bigger and better...
i noticed that when i enable autoscan while i'm in the city recieving alerts, that it stays quieter. on my way home tonight, i was going down a streach of road that has constant x and k band falses all the way to the freeway entrance and the v995 stayed quiet! good for when i have passengers, but when i'm alone, its either city lox or highway mode for me! haha
Its obvious the 995 autoscan and the X65 autoscan are entirely different. I wish we could do some testing on this to see... Any idea Jim?
the only reason i brought this up was becuase when we drive with passengers, most of them get anoyed real quickly when the RD goes off and no cop is to be found. it would make an interesting test, but i dont think it would be all that practical
