Manufacturer Refurbished?

Looking on EBay I can find an Escort 8500, sold through Escort for the price of 150.
However, it is "manufacturer refurbished."
It comes with a 6month warranty as opposed to the full year. I have never bought a detector before and am looking to purchase one as a gift. Anyone have any advice ?

My other option is to get a brand new 955 Beltronics.
I assume the Escort is better but HOW much better?

In this case do you recommend the better, refurbished product, or the lesser quality but brand new product?

Typically Escort was selling the version before the x50, that was awhile back, not sure if they doing the x50's for $150 now.

If you love the escort 8500 style then go for it, typically if it is factory direct you will get excellent performance, and most likely if it is just the 8500 it will be an s7 platform which has execellent ramp up, it also has spec display which the lower end bels do not have. Note: no voice alerts on the 8500.

Welcome to the forum and if it is a Refurb 8500 from Escort then for $150, you cannot beat it for the price. It is a very good RD.

I live in NY if that helps. Mostly not to be driven in the city itself but around the Long Island, Brooklyn, and Queens area.
8500 not x50.
And does the Beltronics model have voice alerts? I don't think my guy friend cares much about voice alerts as much as he cares about being alerted in general. Are the voice alerts that much more helpful ?

If money is not an issue which is mostly to a lot of people and if your a highway warrior I would advice on the higher end RD's to get more out of what you pay for.

I myself was going to buy a lower RD, but I'm glad I didn't, because if I would of bought a lower end RD I would of upgraded soon and I would of wasted more money, I wouldn't want somebody else go down that same road of what if. I should of got that or this.
