Question 9500i falls completely silent while I'm stopped by police car

Over the weekend I'm driving on a state road in NJ (Route 10). It's a 6 lane road with limited traffic lights and can be pretty wide open on the weekends. I'm coming over a ridge and heading down hill at about 70 MPH in I guess a 50 MPH zone. Light ahead is turning red, I start to slow down for the light. I local police car is sitting off to the side in a parking lot. He comes out behind me at the light. I'm sitting, he's sitting. When the light turns green, on come his lights. I make a right at the light, he follows me until I pull over. I'm frantically taking down my 9500i and putting it away lest I anger him by its presence. He comes to my window and asks for my license, registration, etc. Then he asks me if I know why he's pulled me over. I say no. He says: "I clocked you at 72 MPH in a 50 zone." I'm thinking, clocked me? My detector never went off. Not a whisper. Not a sound of any kind. Nothing. Silent. Thankfully, as I had a clean driving record, he decided to give me just a warning. But hey, what gives? My 9500i goes off all the time. Whenever there are cops in my town, on the highway, anywhere and everywhere. So how is this possible that he clocked me and it never made a peep? Is there some new stealth technology? Was he lying? Is it broken?

Could have been laser, quick trigger, or instant on I suppose. I'm not familiar with NJ leo tactics. Also, isn't NJ known for using x band, or am I mistaken?

Edit: A lot of people on here have encountered x band in NJ, according to a quick search. Do you have x band enabled?

yes, they use a lot of X band in NJ, along with Ka and some laser. But it wasn't laser as his door or window was not open and believe me, the 9500i goes off like a Xmas tree when hit by laser. And even instant on would at least trigger the detector to tell me I've been nailed. That's happened to me before actually.

I'm assuming the 9500i uses the same GPS Icon type setup as the 9500ix (correct me if i'm wrong please )was the GPS's satellite icon spinning? If you were in a lockout area and the police's radar was in the same frequency, you may have experienced one of the few lockout issues the 9500's see.

Glad you got away ticket free though.

Eh, I've heard of detectors missing instant on and quick trigger shots on occasion.

Do recall the position of the LEO's car in the parking lot? Was it parallel or perpendicular to the road?

Your 9500i not going could've been caused by one of these:

    1. The LEO was shooting laser and your 9500i missed the laser signal completely. It isn't uncommon for a radar detector to fail to alert to laser.

    2. The LEO was using a technique called quick-trigger and your detector missed the QT shot. More info on quick-trigger here:

    3. If there are false alerts present where the LEO was sitting and you had these false alerts locked out, then the 9500i may have inadvertently filtered out the LEO's radar signal because it thought it was a false alert if the LEO's radar unit was within 30MHz of one of the false alerts.

    4. Your 9500i is busted and needs to be sent in for repair.
