Default New to nicer detectors, picked up a Escort 7500-S

For years I have run an older (2002) Cobra detector from Walmart. It has done a decent job of protecting me from my local country cops, and an ok job of protecting me on the highway. I even took it on a 5500 mile road trip last year and it did a great job of alerting me of law enforcement across the country.

Now, I bought a 2nd car and wanted something to go in it. Picked up another cheap Cobra from Walmart ($30, 787 something) and expected it to do as well as my other cheap Cobra. Well, long story short, it sucks.

So I went on the prowl for nicer units, and found most to be out of my price range ( I am a college student. ie: Budget). Also the general opinion was either get the Escort 8500 refurb as a minimum, or dont get anything at all. I did run across a very nice Escort 7500-S on ebay for $60 shipped, and I picked up a direct wire cord.

When the unit arrives, what do I need to check for to make sure its functioning properly? As simple as drive by a cop and see if it picks him up?

Anything I need to do to the unit before I put it in use?

That detector isn't worth the money. It is old and obsolete. I suggest selling it and saving your money for an 8500 x50 refurb. In this business you get what you pay for. Sorry to be the buzz killer.

You should have just saved up $150 and got an Escort 8500 refurb because the Escort 7500 wasn't good even when it was brand new.

    V1: X band 3.0 miles, K band 2.6 miles, Ka band 4.0 miles
    Escort 7500: X band 1.9 miles, K band 1.4 miles, Ka band 1.8 miles

    Test from 2000:

Escort should take that detector in as a trade towards something else, like the 8500, shouldn't they?

Sure but that would still be more expensive than buying the refurb from them on Ebay.

I understand its not as good as nicer detectors such as an 8500, but it sure should be better than my current setup shouldnt it? I mean, you guys need to remember...I have been running a $40 detector for 7 years and been happy with it.

It's just hard for anybody here to recommend anything that is less than $150. Nothing brand new that is less than $150 is worth a shi* so nobody will get excited about it or back you up when you purchase something in this range.

It's hard to believe that a $40 detector kept you safe for 7 years. Are you sure you just don't drive any faster than 5 mph over so no cops ever mess with you?

I mean, I drive between 5-15mph over most of the time. Every once in a while on the trip from Raleigh to Wilmington I will run 85-90 in a 70, but nothing extreme.

Wow. In NC I would run nothing but the best. A $40 is not good.

The old rule in NC is anything more than 7 >the PSL w/get you nabbed by the LEO's so take some advice from a fellow North Cackylackian, you need to invest in some primo equipment if your going to drive over these limits, otherwise you might want to slow down on those speeding habits of yours. I understand your on a modest budget, but I would go w/a minimum of an 8500, and preferably something more high end like a V1/Redline setup.
As you probably already know anything 15 and >than the PSL will get your DL pulled (which is total BS but it is what it is) so something to think about.

Remember NC has RADAR / LIDAR / VASCAR and the LEO's are anal retentive w/a Too Bookoo FU I No Love you attitude

A good CB / Jammer Set up wouldn't hurt either.
