Default Want to switch out blue LED for red LED from old detector

I just bought the X50 and found out that my blueblocker sunglasses makes it impossible to see the blue screen except on overcast days and it's then still hard to see. I only wear blueblockers so switching is not an option for me.

I still have my old 8500 I bought 5 years ago and I thought maybe I could switch out the LEDS so the new X50 will be red (will install other one in wifes car), but I was afraid to do it since the boards close to the display are a little different in the circuitry. Maybe the blue takes more or less power and I might fry something. Has anyone tried to do this?

    Thanks,
    Chris

If you just bought the x50 I suggest you go exchange it for a red one. It's ~$40 cheaper and you won't void your warrenty by taking it apart.

I considered that, but Ultimate electonics is the only ones that carry it around here and they told me it would take 8 weeks to get in the red. I don't want to be unprotected that long. Looked at Ebay, but could find a good enough deal that justified buying from a private person.

It can't take that long to get an order in.It might just be a case where they really don't want to take it back..

When I bought the blue, I asked first about the red. I've been using blueblockers for 15 years, nothing else works as good for me. I have sensitive eyes. Blueblockers are cool.

I bet I could take the red out of my old one and put it in the X50 since the x50 comes in red.

I switched them successfully. The old one is now blue and the X50 is now red.

From the little I remember (pictures) I thought it would a relatively big soder job. Or was it just a small ribbon connection swap?

Hey Ibnox.....as far as I know, those things were introduced in the United States in the early 90's....so you must really be a young 'un to talk about "dad wearing them".

I still see them advertised ocassionally late at night on infomercials, so I guess some people still buy and use them. I actually had a pair in the early 90's when they had only been out for a little while, but didn't like them. They were very effective at blocking glare and you could see clearly without squinting your eyes at all, regardless of how bright the sun was....but the "orange tint" and overall look and appearance of them just weren't for me.

So, what type of shades would you suggest these days instead?
