    Default CHP Laser for Tailgaters

There was a news clip on BBC of all places showing a CHP Motor Cop demoing a new hand held laser which read out both speed and distance times between oncoming vehicles. He was shown giving a ticket to a fellow doing 57 in a 55mph zone but had only a .73 of a second distance to the car infront of him. He told the guy he had to give 3 seconds or get tagged.

I think I could live with this type of enforcement. I really hate guys coming up behind me and sitting on my bumper.

IMO the technology isn't accurate enough to be using for ticket writing. But tailgating is an important thing which should be enforced more than it is here.

I wish LEO's could enforce a slower traffic keep right law like they have in Germany. It would completely solve the problems of tailgating because while I hate people who tailgate I also hate being on the Interstate having some weekend warrior in a minvan full of children passing an 18wheeler on the left with the cruise set at 68. I drove home from school with a friend who did this while he was driving. Needless to say he wasnt allowed to drive anymore for that trip...

I've been pulled over for tailgating before. What happened is it was a 55mph zone and there was 2 lanes. In both lanes for over 20 miles both cars where driving under 30 mph parallel to each other. I was not tailgating the whole time till almost the end when the light changed red. When the light turned green I accelerated from the light I did it at the same rate as the car in front of me so I stayed right on their tail. While doing so I signaled and changed lanes to get around both cars. The cop pulled me over for tailgating and I told him I did it to change lanes and he just looked at me oddly not understanding why. Well if I didn't drive closer I wouldn't have been able to change lanes. Major POS. It wasn't a moving violation though. I'm not sure how that happened.

It is 2 secs, but it is up to the officer if he feels conditions are not safe enough to follow that close. in semi truck driving school they say 4-8 secs because of the added weight of the truck, or atleast that is what i was told.

My buddy got pulled over when he went to pass slower traffic, but he went over the psl to pass. The cop wrote him a ticket for speeding, and also got him for being to close to the car he passed. The cop said he came too close to the car before passing it.

edit: It was also a visual estimate by the cop as far as being to close. To my knowledge ohio doesn't do much about tailgaters (at least on the turnpike, people follow on my ass all the time even past cops).
