Default Laser Jammer questions, HELP ! !

    Hello,

What Laser Jammers use LED's and which one's use Laser Diodes? Which ones perform better in the real world? It seems to me like a laser diode would be MUCh more effective than the LED's, but I'm no expert on the jammers.

    Please help Todd

Laser Interceptor uses Laser Diodes. Blinder and Escort have traditionally used LEDs although I am not sure about the latest Mx7 series.

All Blinder laser jammer systems use LEDs. ALG9, LPP, and LI use diode. Also, the Escort ZR3/4 use LEDs.

here is my take on the whole LED vs laser diode debate.

    Laser diodes =

pros: more power, easier to control to prevent jamming codes

cons: tend to be inconsistant (JTG one run, high PT the next), can really heat up if used for an extened period of time (when they get hot the controller drops voltage and poweroutput falls to you are more susceptible to a PT), if it burns out you don't have anymore jamming, expensive

    LED:

Pros: Reliable (IR led's have been around forever and have had tons of research), consistent (get a PT at 300 and 10 runs later it will still be right around the same), very low heat production, if one burns out you still have 7 others to help jam so not a total loss, cheap

Cons: less powerful (but new high power IR led's being developed all the time (usually for medical field)), hard to control to prevent jamming codes on overseas guns,

Ideal jammer: one that uses both, 8 LED's for normal guns and 1 laser diode for those guns that are known to give trouble to jammers with LEDs

I have to wonder, why a diode-based jammer would tend to have issues with overheating but the lidar gun itself, which also uses laser diodes, doesn't?

The gun gets used for hours at a time, being fired over and over, yet it doesn't overheat or burn out. Jammers are rarely used (except when doing JTG testing). So, in theory, a diode in a jammer should outlast the one in the lidar gun. Assuming both devices are properly designed.

I think most of the burning-out issues was with the old Lidatek jammers. I haven't heard of an AL6, LPP, or LI burning out or overheating.

Maybe this is one of the reasons why laser guns have to get calibrated periodically? To replace the diode?

Lase Diodes over heating is a thing of the past with the current laser diode jammers

Look at the results from the GOL event which by far does more test runs than any other independent group and there is no break in between the runs each jammer is tested against every gun before moving onto the next jammer

No, they're calibrated to confirm their accuracy so the tickets can stand in court.

simple, big heat sinks, the laser diode screws to a heat sink and it draws the heat away, in a LJ there is no space for such things, so the only way to prevent overheating is to run them at a lower voltage or as they heat up decrease the voltage to protect the LD.
