I came across a similar encounter on the 400, going southbound near Major Mack a few weeks ago. Redline started alerting from far away and I saw the LEO parked parallel to the flow of traffic. Looked like he didn't have the front detector on as my Redline went quiet shortly after I passed him.

One a sidenote, the range and ramp up on the Redline is pretty impressive!

Ramp up on the Redline is pretty impressive? I just about fell off my chair when I read that. Did you own anything else other than Escort products?

Djrams please comment on this, can't wait to read your comment.

that is pretty good if he was using just the rear antenna

Honestly, I haven't. This is my first radar detector and am pretty new to this. So what RD's out there have superior ramp up?

Driving around a little more with the Redline, I can say I've seen both instances of good and bad ramp up. Best when a LEO is stationary and bad when LEO is moving about.

All Escort (even 9500ci) have a bad rampup. If you put it in normal mode and look at the strength bar, you will notice that the alert does not change with every bar like it should. It changes every 2 bar I believe or something like that. That's why you get a full blown alert for 3 miles which shouldn't really happen. Not sure about whistler but Valentine and Beltronics have pretty accurate ramp ups.

Yeah, being in Ontario, my only real choices were the Redline and the Sti Magnum. I went for the Redline for its slightly better range capabilities. I did have two instances on the hwy yesterday, where it went immediately into a full signal warning for ~5-10 seconds and then nothing :S Does that mean I passed a LEO in the oncoming lane or just a false alert? Is the update that is coming supposed to improve this sensitivity in ramp up?

The LEO might have been using I/O or you might have passed the LEO. Usually when you pass him and he is running C/O, you still get a weaker signal for a few seconds because the beam bounces back at you.

The update will not fix this. Escort apparently claims that the rampup was made that way on purpose

That could be "blind spot monitoring".... look for Acura's, Mercedes, and Lexus's..... Could also be a cop driving the opposite direction with a concrete barrier dividing the hwy... I have had the same expierence...

Ah, I'll keep that in mind... Also, I got what I think was a false laser alert today! It was just after exiting the 407W at 403. I wonder if the transponders can cause falses (not sure as I just got mine). Can anyone confirm?
