NYPD caught shooting rear lidar!!!!

Hi all,

While traveling eastbound on the GCP I noticed a NYPD Highway Patrol car stilling on the shoulder right by the on-ramp from the Cross Island Parkway. Because I was heading eastbound I wasn't concerned since the LEO appeared to be tagging eastbound traffic. However, as I passed him I noticed he was shooting cars from behind!!! (Using PL3) He wasn't perpendicular to the road but instead was just slightly out to the left on the shoulder with his window down. We has aiming at cars that passed him (I guess people who were clueless his was out in the open). My only other thought was that maybe he was tagging traffic on my side, running a two car operation. However to get to the point, its it even legal for a LEO's to shoot rear lidar in NY??? If so I'm going to have to get LI's in the front/rear.

Am not really surprised , but it is good to know they do it in nys ....by the way leos have all rights...
as long it is for our $afety ....

I know that GA law just says that the LEO has to be visible from 250 feet (which isn't much if you're traveling in a car). NY/NJ seem to be really serious about their laser, so I'm betting rear laser is no issue.

Yep it's legal, and it seems like new a trend.

On another forum just heard a story about a NCPD Highway unit shooting from the back, he was sitting on the other side of an underpass up on a hill, very hidden on 135 S bound just after the entrance for the LIE.

Yeah, I think rear laser is a bit unethical. A cop shooting you in the back? Not sporting at all. I've seen it done here before in DFW. Thats why you have to run WAZE on your phone.

I saw a cop doing that right past the eastbound toll booth at the Robert F. Kennedy (Tri-Borough) bridge about a month ago.

Maybe a trend in ny like texas but thats cause theres infrastructure to do it. places like florida would be hard due to not too many huge bridges where the police could hide well to hit you from the rear. but in ny, i can see winding bridges and intersections make a good shooting position. i dont know, just giving my 2Cents.

I've seen MSP doing this on I75. I don't think it is about being sporting....it's about the KILL!
