STATE POLICE: Troopers to conduct speed patrols this month
Comment on this story

State Police District 17 will conduct extra checks during February.

Troopers will concentrate on speeding violations, as well as restraint violations and other traffic violations that are contributing causes of crashes, including following too closely, improper lane usage and aggressive driving. The speed patrols are in addition to regular patrols.

The program is called Speed Patrols Enforcing and Educating Drivers.

Speeding-related crashes account for 30 percent of all traffic fatalities, police said.

Statistics show the probability of death, disfigurement or debilitating injury doubles for every 10 mph over 50 mph that a vehicle travels.

Also, police said, passenger cars and light trucks use about 50 percent more fuel traveling at 75 mph than at 65 mph.
