You aren't alone if state troopers handed you a speeding ticket in the last two weeks on Interstates 480 and 90.

Nearly 1,200 drivers got stung.

The State Highway Patrol's motorcycle unit issued the bulk of the tickets - 649 - in four days last week. The unit did not target the area this week.

The patrol is trying to reduce traffic deaths in Cuyahoga County. The county topped the state last year with 68 roadway deaths. More than 14,000 accidents have occurred in Cuyahoga County during the last four years.

This month-long stint will end Nov. 16 and is the third time troopers have targeted the Cleveland area this year. Drivers received about 3,600 tickets in May and July. But fatal accidents and those causing injuries dropped 21 percent during the periods, the patrol said.

The patrol is policing stretches of interstate running through Cleveland, Brooklyn, Euclid, Garfield Heights, Maple Heights and Warrensville Heights.

Troopers cited 407 drivers for what it calls aggressive driving: speeding more than 20 mph over the limit, tailgating, weaving and cutting off other drivers.

Sgt. Toby Smith, a patrol spokesman, said the aggressive behavior leads to road rage and crashes. Drivers need to understand the dangers of speeding, he said.
