THE VICTORIAN POLICE force will install 200 new upgraded Moving Mode Radar cameras in the state’s police cars in November, joining 150 units already in use in regional areas.
Named ‘Stalkers’, the cameras can lock on and detect the speed of vehicles travelling towards and away from the police car, from distances of up to one kilometre away.

Currently, the cameras are used primarily on open country roads, but the new upgraded systems will be used to target speeding drivers in metropolitan areas.
“Some people think it’s safe to speed and only slow down at the locations they regularly see police parked and using radar equipment,” Traffic Support Division Superintendent David Newton said.
“MMR equipment will surprise those drivers. Those motorists will not be booked by vehicles parked on the side of the road, but by police driving in front and behind them.”
The State Government has funded the purchase of the new equipment.
Police expect that more than 350 vehicles will be fitted with the MMR Stalker cameras by the end of 2010.
Areas already monitored by Stalker cameras are: Ballarat, Wyndham, Melton, Horsham, Colac, Stawell, Whittlesea, Sunbury, Romsey, Kyneton, Castlemaine, Numurkah, Tatura, Red Cliffs, Benalla, Wodonga, Bunyip, Drouin, Korumburra, Leongatha, Yarram, Mallacoota and Rosedale.
In September, Victoria recorded a new record low monthly road toll of 13 deaths, besting the previous lowest toll by four. Victoria Police Minister Bob Cameron said the use of speed cameras contributed to the new record.
“While Victoria is achieving record low road tolls any life lost on our roads is too many, and the Brumby Labor Government will continue to work with Victoria Police and road safety authorities to help save lives,” Mr Cameron said.

Here's the official police media release.

    Thursday, 29 October 2009 06:00

Drivers who speed on Victorian roads will soon be the target of more than 200 high-tech radars currently being installed in police vehicles.

Upgraded Moving Mode Radar (MMR) equipment will allow police to lock on and detect the speed of vehicles travelling towards or away, from distances of up to one kilometre.

Police believe the new equipment will save lives and reduce road trauma during the busy Christmas and holiday period.

The directional radars, named Stalkers, will be installed on the dashboards of police vehicles by the end of November.

The devices are primarily used on country roads but will soon be targeting speeding drivers on the fringe of country and metropolitan areas. .

Traffic Support Division Superintendent David Newton said the equipment would be used to reduce road trauma over the traffic-heavy Christmas and New Year period.

“Some people think it’s safe to speed and only slow down at the locations they regularly see police parked and using radar equipment,” Mr Newton said.

“MMR equipment will surprise those drivers. Those motorists will not be booked by vehicles parked on the side of the road, but by police driving in front and behind them.”

“I read last week about the man who lost his probationary licence in Benalla, just 45 minutes after passing his test in Wangaratta. He was caught by one of the Stalker radars already in operation. This highlights the effectiveness of the technology,” Supt Newton said.

Mr Newton said an increase in traffic on roads over the coming holiday period tempted some drivers to speed to their destinations.

“The MMR technology allows police to target those motorists doing the wrong thing, no matter what direction they are travelling in,” he said.

“Our message to drivers travelling throughout the state remains simple – obey the road rules or we will catch you before someone gets hurt.”

MMRs are already in use in Ballarat, Wyndham, Melton, Horsham, Colac, Stawell, Whittlesea, Sunbury, Romsey, Kyneton, Castlemaine, Numurkah, Tatura, Red Cliffs, Benalla, Wodonga, Bunyip, Drouin, Korumburra, Leongatha, Yarram, Mallacoota and Rosedale.

The State Government has funded the purchase of the new equipment.

Existing and upgraded equipment will be redistributed to remote areas of Victoria to ensure as many roads as possible will be policed with MMR technology.

Police anticipate that by the end of 2010, more than 350 vehicles will be fitted with MMR equipment.

no offense to the people from Australia or anything but what the hell is wrong with the companies in AU? Who cares that people speed there, the dang country is almost empty. All of these nasty crazy ways to get you speeding come from there. Maybe you people as Australian citizens, should stand up and make technologies like this illegal, vote on it and make it a law.

Who cares is the Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) and its vast sums of money which are obtained from the compulsory insurance component of vehicle registration renewals. This is used for the rehab of victims of road trauma so these funds need protecting.

In as far as organizing any type of political revolution goes the attitude is "nah not this weekend, I'm off to the beach" so the rest of us just have to suck it up.

I sure wish the GOL team would have done test that would see if the radar gun could get a speed reading before the detector went off. Also to see how fast it takes for each radar gun to get a reading once turned on and also on in I/O mode.

Can confirm my first 34.7 contact in VIC today.

Was in a 40 km/h road works construction zone, C/O over the hill coming at me.

There was a good 1/2 mile of detectorless pissedoff traffic piled up behind my truck by the time the danger passed.

Lots of stink eye. Poor fools.

    The Stalker IS out there.
