Eventhough the kid is only 14 I would not be against putting him in jail for life. If your already stealing cars at 14, you are just going to go out and terrorize the public your whole adult life. Until you do something bad enough to get sent to jail for a long time. I say just put him in jail now for killing a little girl, and you won't have to worry about him committing crimes and hurting anyone else as a adult.

the decision making part of the 14 yr old's brain is not fully developed. there for cannot make rational decisions like an adult.Therefore cannot face the same punishment .It also means that those troublesome teenage years (usually!) pass as the brain begins to shift its focus of activity. Instead of being run by their emotions, you could say, the emotional decision making in adolescents begins to be tempered by the prefrontal lobes, the area where decisions about right and wrong and cause-effect relationships are dealt with.

Exactly... everyone is powder-puff with kids these days, and the outcome is exactly what you have here. The kid is bound to be have a revolving door for the rest of his adult life if he is not put away now. Stealing a van from a 'community center' says it all...

the boy definitely needs to be punished ! but there is alot of blame to go around here. The vans driver at the community center had to have left the keys in the ignition, the 14 year boys parents for not teaching their son better, and a little blame on the police for not handling this completely right! i'm very sad this whole incident happen. I to have a 10 year little girl and a 15 year old son and i can't imagine what those familys are going through right now. i'm definitely gonna hug my kids goodnight alittle tighter tonight

While there is truth in what you say, somehow most of us made it through our teenage years without stealing any vehicles. IOW, there's more to this than mere adolescent (lack of) brain development.

Exactly... the lack of brain development here (likely)* has nothing to do with the issue at hand... basically what your saying (Marsh Vegas) would work for something like the (non-embryonic) suicide of a young adult... where their brain simply cannot understand the issues at hand... it just doesn't work or apply in this situation.

A 14 yr/old does not lack the brain capacity to comprehend stealing something (especially a van) is wrong.

It is important to note that the kid obviously didn't intend to kill someone, but a 14 year old easily knows that the first step is wrong (the stealing)... yet did it anyways.



NOW where I said (likely)* is because: If the kid has some true mental disorder... it is possible he cannot understand the concept between right and wrong.

The blame game... sure you can always find places to put blame.

I could really care less about the van. just hit me close to home, and im real emotional a little 9yr old girl is dead because i feel he stole the van fine bad boy right he needs to sit in a cell for a couple years thinking ( I should'v stole that van) BUT when the police got involved the situation escalated 10-fold, scared the live n sh!t i'm sure out of that younge boy .causing that little girls death Im sure the police could have done something to have prevented this like box the boy in, pit him something

As Jack Thompson would say 'we are missing the main culprit in all this Video Games...Grand Theft Auto, Saints Row they are all to blame. Not this poor little kid. He may be young but im sure he has seen enough tv , enough car chases enough accidents to know what he did would not end well. By the time he goes to court his lawyer will blame everyone but that kid. That kid will get a light sentence then get out of juvie and continue his same behavior. I view stuff like this very differently because I work with teens and young adults like this, you will be surprised the amount of adults that convince these kids that they arent to blame or share just a little blame in their actions. wHAT WORSE THE KIDS BELIEVE IT.

One of the things I miss most about our society these days is the concept of "personal responsibility." Nothing is ever anyone's fault, it's always someone else's.
