You're correct. A current keeps the particles aligned, making the plate clear. When there is no current, the particles are mostly random, making the plate opaque.

Looks a lot like the idea I posted about using welder's mask electronic auto-dimming glass. You'd need 2 sheets, about $50 each with the included light sensor.

if you put them together it's not going to look smooth and might get stopped for it. Plus to cut these for what you need it's not that easy to do and I don't even know if you can do it in a home workshop.

Too much mechanical that can go wrong. One thing gets bent somehow from a curb or debris hitting it and that's it. A fender bender will take out any you have including the thing below or the LCD plate.I'd rather go with something like this. The mechanicals and shade is protected while a plate is showing I saw a video where this thing works underwater. It's an animated gif so you have to open the photo to watch.

I love the LCD idea for the rear plate. I'd love ot have oneo but that is a lot of money and I really don't have a need for it.

I have the plate flipper in the front of my vette because the front plate just ruins the lines on the front of the car. I've had it for over a year and no issues. If you saw how it worked it is really simple. If something goes wrong with it, it wouldn't be too hard to fix. It is literally a small electric motor, relay system, a thin cable to move the plate on a track. Spray some lube on it here and there and you are good to go.

Also the car is so low if the plate gets damaged so are other things on the front end. The air dam is significantly lower than the plate.

That's why I said over in the other thread that is was in the idea stage. Blacking a plate isn't enough... once you see the flash its too late, that why I said over there that auto dimming calibrated to go off only on flashes from cameras. They dim fast, in 2-5 milliseconds and a microcontroller could be set to keep them dimmed only long enough to ruin the camera exposure yet not be detectable by the human eye (unless someone directed them to specifically watch your plate because they knew it was going to happen). 100ms of dark time (probably less) would do it.
