Also is there any chance of whistler coming out with another RD model sometime or are these going to be the ones for a while?
Another option is to step him up to a beltronics unit. I have the 955 that I might give him and buy myself another unit sometime. How does the 955 compare in performance to the other whistler models?
Heard that the Whistler 695 is suppose to be an excellent radar detector, you can change the display colors and program the colors for each radar. 695 will automatically tell you the frequency of the radar source. Good amount of features for the money.

Ka band performance? Definitely yes. I hate blue LED displays, but in the case of the Pro78 I do actually like both the shade and brightness of its blue display. The XTR-695 of course has its multi-color LCD display. I have been considering this radar detector model for my father since he tends to get distracted and not pay attention to how fast he is driving. I figured that I would configure its display alert colors with red for K and Ka bands and laser, white for X band, and deep blue for non-alert conditions.
The Bel Vector 955 has better performance on all three radar bands. Obviously for your dad you would configure it by turning off X band. Yet K band false alerts around town might be more annoying for him compared to the Whistler models. Yet I have found that my Pro-78 performs extremely well against Ka band radar as long as the Ka band radar gun is ahead of you and pointed in your general direction. This is the scenario where the Whistler, using Mike B's patented signal sweep technology, allows it to sniff out extremely weak Ka band radar even though the Pro78/690/695 inherently have somewhat less raw Ka band sensitivity.
So...
-- If your dad's driving is mostly suburban driving then get him one of the three Whistler models which you are thinking about.
-- If your dad's driving is mostly open road driving away from false alerts then get him the Bel V955.
These are my recommendations for what they are worth. :)

I like the idea of the 965 colors and the ability to actually completely turn off the x-band. K band alerts are a little annoying but our local PD uses k-band and surrounding areas use a mixture of K and Ka. Most of his driving is urban so that's why I am highly considering the whistler models. What are the major differences between the pro 78, 690 and the 695. I know you can turn off x-band on all fo them but what else, other than the color display? The differnace in price betwwen them all is about $40 so not a big price differance. I just want one that will have the most features for the price.

Hi languy99,
The XTR-690 substitutes a somewhat less visible LCD display for the Pro78's blue LED display. The XTR-695 on the other hand features a multi-color LCD yet still somewhat less visible LCD display compared to the Pro78, yet features slightly better overall performance. In truth, all three of these Whistlers perform rather similarly with the XTR-695 having a bit of a performance edge. Thus basically it is merely just a matter of what specific features you think that your father would prefer.
