received used V1. Not detecting jack
I received my fleabay purchase of my v1.8 (no pop) Valentine and could hardly contain myself. Imagine my frustration when only 2 of 10 known K falses were picked up. I've used djrams recommended settings which sound safe to me, and have sat 5-10 min in front of the falses in A and liitle L mode without a peep.
1 down - turns X band off
2 up - turns K band on
3 up - Ka band on
4 up - laser on
5 up - Ka band normal rampup
6 up - Ka band false alarm guard on
7 down - K band automute on
8 up - enables mute lever
A up - Main volume controlled by volume knob
b down c up d up - 30 second K band automute
E down - K band stays muted at 4 lights
F down - K band stays muted at 6 lights
G down - Rear K band at muted volume
H down - Ku band off
The weak. Detection of the two it did pick up followed with the arrows correctly it seemed. Im positive its not working and even spoke to Valentine about it Here's my question to y'all.
I paid $240 because Paypal discounted the purchase. Do you recommend I return it for my money back via Paypal and shop for another (seller claimed it worked perfect). Maybe try to gey $45 back from them? Or just keep it and send it in to valentine with another $45 plus shipping?

Re: received used V1. Not detecting jack
Reset everything to factory defaults and try it again.
What is the software ver?
Do you have another detector to try the same test with?
$240 for a 1.8 is a pretty damn good price.

I have my 9500i that goes nuts in those locations.
Not a peep from the V1. I don't recall what the software version is. It shouldnt really matter though considering how silent it was 200 feet from the door openers.
I went through the settings with the tech from V1. We both are thinking its out of calibration or something.
I agree, $240 is great (I bid like $260 and thats good, but PayPal discounted it for some special they were running). I'm thinking I may try to get the $45 back from the seller since he claimed it worked perfect and it doesnt detect anything at all.

Here's what I did. My wife bought mine for me for $280 from someone who also said it worked (and with RDs that is a gray area, A LOT of people will just say it works if it turns on, course we all know theres a lot more to RDs working or not working). So he said it worked, and he had over 1000 positives, so she thoguht why not. I got it and had the same experience as you, alot of my false areas, actually, all of them save for one Ka false wouldnt register at ALL. All X and K falses that i KNEW to be falses would not register. I figured ok thats the price you pay for using fleabay, sent it in to VR and spent the $45, so now im in it for $325, it came back working flawlessly, and i figured hey, still got $75 off of a new one. I didn't push the guy to reimburse for the $45 just simply to save myself a headache, i still got a badass detector for a significant amount less then new. Its a risk you take from using ebay.
Bottom line, I say send it in, worst case you pay $285 after the repair, THAT is a steal my friend.
Course, you could run the risk of it being REALLY a dud and they call you up and say it will cost $100+. Though thats a low chance, its still a chance you have to consider. But I think, personally, I would still send it in, I did, and it worked out in my case. Good luck to you in whatever venue you choose.

Im waiting to hear back from the seller. Im not too happy about being lied to. $240 IS a steal, IF IT WORKS. And it doesnt. I plan on trying to get some back or Im leaving negative feedback.

Send it back. Get your $$ and buy one factory direct. Again, you get 30 days to see if it fits your style. To hell with eBay.

Did you check the serial # on V1's website?
What is the serial #???

Yes I did. It shows up as he advertised.

Re: received used V1. Not detecting jack
Here is what I would do before you leave negative feedback, send it back and raise hell.
Check the serial #. Compare the cost of updating the unit
to the cost of sending it in for checkup, you can determine that
by calling Valentine 1.
If the cost of an upgrade is the same or less than the cost of the
repair, it's a no brainer.
If you don't want to send it in, then contact eBay and go through
the conflict resolution and try to get your $$$$ back.

Ok, so for another $139 you can get a brand new detector. So if you go on this avenue, you pretty much paid $380 for a new detector, so you saved $19....
Call V1 and ask how much is to check and possibly repair the unit. Repairing it, will most likely not be worth it, unless it's less than $139.
In the meantime, contact the seller and see what he has to say about this.

Im confused as hell factoryfreak as to what youre saying. First you say that I'd only be saving $19 to get a new one, and then you say repairing it will "most likely not be worth it unless its less than $139"
Im under the impression from Valentine thatd cost me $45 for repair.

Ok, let me explain.
I took your serial #, put it in V1's website.
If you send them the unit plus $139, you get a brand new unit. That's the cost of the upgrade, you'll get the latest and greatest.
Now, you paid $240 for this unit already, so if you're going to add another 139, you're at roughly $380 into this. So going that route, you didn't save a whole lotta money on this deal, considering a new V1 is $399.
So what I suggest is, call V1 and ask them, how much it is to have the unit checked? I don't think repairing the unit is going to cost $45, but I could be wrong. If it's $45, then by all means do it.
If not, you can either put the $139 into it or tell the seller to send you your $$$ back.
-
Re: received used V1. Not detecting jack
It's definitely way out of tune. It has to go in for tune/repair for sure. The biggest problem with these older versions is that they do not tell you when they are out of tune and they go out of tune much more frequently than the newer versions. The newer versions will display an "E" on the screen in a case like this to let you know they're busted. I say send it in to VR, have them upgrade it to the latest rev, which will basically get you a brand new V1 and try to get the cost of the repair/upgrade from the seller since he sold you a busted unit.

Well according to the serial number, the only thing I'm missing is POP and I dont really want POP anyway. Unfortunately they're closed at this time. Who has sent their older units in for "repair" or calibration, and what did it cost?

You're missing the point, POP or not POP, you will get a BRAND NEW UNIT!
I doubt the repair is going to be $45, highly unlikely. $75-$125 is my bet.
Be patient and call them tomorrow morning.

Thats a Valentine policy? Send your older unit in plus $139 and they send you a different NEW unit? If thats the case, like you said I got a new unit for $379 or so.
Are you suggesting thats most likely my best bet?
Noone else has a price of what they've paid for repairs?
-
Re: received used V1. Not detecting jack
RadarKit, just out of curiousity, why do you have a V1 and the 9500i?

You will not get a brand new unit. They will upgrade your current unit with the latest parts.
He was referring to the money that you spent on the used and paying for the upgrade, you could of bought a new one directly from VR

They will swap the applicable guts of the unit, assuming your case is in good condition.

That's right, they don't "upgrade" the unit, they send you a brand new one.
Call them tomorrow, tell the rep the unit isn't working right, ask him/her what is the worst case scenario to repair the unit. If the repair bill could reach over $140, either pay the $140 for an "upgrade" or return this unit to the sell.

FYI - this is from the V1 site:
"if your Valentine One is out of warranty (older than one
year), send $45 or a credit card number with expiration
date to cover cost of diagnosis and repair."
I'm not understanding your question. Lots of us own more than one detector.

Assuming the case is in good condition, you can pretty call it a new unit, but I hope I made my point clear.

$45 for checking it out, not fixing it.
I won't open this up for debate, since it's debated in other threads.
I did this after I sold my X50 and got a 9500i.
Ditched the 9500 after a week and got a new V1. Best move ever.
Again, that's just me.

The casing isnt "like new" by any means. Its been around since 2002 and never was sent in for service.
Theres plenty of small scratches and scuffs in it.
OK, well...bottom line is I need to hear back from the seller to see how he's going to handle it, and call V1 tomorrow. We'll see how it goes. I'll report back. Glad I have my 9500i in the meantime. I HATE driving without it.
Bottom line is I got a unit that no work. :p

Sadly, that's the problem with people on eBay and with people in general.
Let us know what V1 says, ask for a pricing option on the case as well.
My gut feeling is that fixing this unit (circuitry and case) plus the $240 you already paid will exceed $399.......
Hopefully the seller isn't some punk and will work with u.

It does say its possible it'll exceed $45 dollars, but its the general repair/diagnosis cost.
This was his email to me right after the sale:
"you've got nothing to worry about with the radar detector. I've had it for a long time and I just don't use it as much anymore, so I figured I'd rather sell it. I'm an honest seller and there are no stories with this V1. It was mine, I owned it since it was new, and now it's yours and you're going to love it. I'll definitely miss it and I'll probably get a ticket now that I don't have it."

Exactly. Is the BS you have to put up with really worth the deal?? To hell with eBay. Your just getting someone's lemon, or at least that's the risk you take. Go factory direct, if the V1 is not to your liking, simply send it back in 30 days.

When I wrote back to the seller, I asked how he wanted to handle it, i.e. - pay for the repair, or refund my money. Havent heard back yet.
He did ship it "fully insured" though....I wonder if he'll make claim it was damaged.

Did you pay him with paypal?
If you did, just open a dispute. Paypal is owned by eBay.
I find that when people don't respond to me in a timely fashion, when I open a dispute against them, all of the sudden, they respond really fast.
Amazing eh?

I think there is a time frame for him to respond then you have to follow eBay's complaint chain. eBay heavily favors buyers now. I hope you've learned a lesson though, screw eBay for consumer electronics.

Its VR, not V1 :D
And about the ebay thing Radarkid, ebay is infested with broken, stolen crap that people unload every day.
I even seen people on these forums telling others, if it dont work dump it on ebay and by a new one...
If I were you, I'd get my money back and spend the extra money for a new one with the 30 day drive test.

Re: received used V1. Not detecting jack
Just to respond to your earlier inquiry about repair and cost. As I said earlier, I sent mine in, the unit had a bad board and was way out of calibration. They repaired the damaged board and recalibrated it under the $45 fee. So no, the $45 is NOT JUST for looking at it, it is in fact ALSO for a great deal of thier repairs as well. Time is money, my bet is they have a set of things that are relatively quick fixes that dont require a whole lot of time for a tech to take care of and will do them all under the $45 fee.
My wife ended up e mailing our seller as well to see what he has to say. I went back and read the description and he stated it works perfectly, and that it had euro mode, but according to a post in one of the stickies, this revision is pre euro mode, so he lied there, and it didnt work so he lied there. We called him on it and we'll see what he says.

Too funny. I just PM'd you asking this question.
Thanks for getting back to me. I thought the $45 covered some repair/tunings as stated. Thanks for reassuring me. If its $45, then I ended up spending about $285 for it. Not a bad deal. Let alone if I can get the seller to cover the $45. If he won't cover the $45 I'm going to send it back to him and take it up through PayPal

Not worth all the BS if you ask me. To each his own I guess.

Re: received used V1. Not detecting jack
Response received from the seller:
It worked perfectly when it left here, and if it's broken I'm not happy about it. If you had it on "L" mode, that's the V1's logic mode which it uses to rule out false positives. If you put it on "A" mode it will detect all signals. If you put it on A mode and don't see your false positives then just send it back and I'll refund you, but I'm not happy about this. I had a feeling something like this would happen based on all your questions.
Basically he's implying in this message and another sent via eBay that I did something to cause this problem based on the fact that I asked several questions about the detector ahead of time. Unbelievable.
OK. So he's refunding the money. Guess I'll be ordering a refurb direct from Valentine
