9500ci Without Rear Laser Shifter
I'm finally going to install a 9500ci. I like the detector, the display, etc.
I'm hesitant to install the rear shifter since it's above the license plate and easily visible. What happens if you're ever stopped? The LEO will see the jammer and probably will be more likely to issue you a ticket.
Will the 9500ci give error messages if you don't install the rear shifter? Will it still function without the rear shifter?

I've been stopped several times with rear jammers on my car. I highly doubt any LEO even noticed it, nor would immediately be able to identify it as a countermeasure.

You will get a quick error message on startup, but the 9500ci functions fine without the rear shifter installed. Some have speculated that the 9500ci might lose some reaction time, because it might be constantly looking for that shifter, but I don't think anyone has even tried to verify this.

I tested my 9500ci with and without the shifters plugged in. Reaction time was the same. :)
Re: 9500ci Without Rear Laser Shifter
I told a LEO that asked what the sensors on the back of the car were, that they were parking sensors. He replied cool. He pulled up at one of our testing sessions and sat behind my car for 20 minutes before he noticed them. I would not worry about it.
Re: 9500ci Without Rear Laser Shifter
I'm in the same boat as you. I don’t want the system to be noticed so I too have not installed the rear shifter.
As others have stated here the system will still function but without rear protection.
The only thing I have contemplated is to somehow integrate the rear shifter with something like parking sensors or a backing up cam. Still have to research the subject some more before I decide, but for now no rear shifter install for me.
Re: 9500ci Without Rear Laser Shifter
go ahead and install it. if u dont, u wont have good radar detection in ur rear. if u ever do get stopped and the officer notices just say its a parking sensor

:bs2: What!?!? The rear shifter has absolutely nothing to do with rear radar detection.

Re: 9500ci Without Rear Laser Shifter
Never thought of saying it's a parking sensor.

Of course then they might ask you for a demonstration, and when you can't provide one for them they will be that much more pissed off at you for lying to them :D
I'm like you, I will not mount it there because it just plain looks ugly and I want a stealth install. I don't care if it's illegal or not, the cops read forums like this one and they own jammers too, so don't kid yourself, they know what it is and the first place to look to see if you have one installed. Once they know you have one installed they know that you like to speed. Once they know you like to speed they just connect the dots, and at the very least can ruin your day by giving you a hassle. Rule of thumb, the less they know about your install, the better off you will be :)

Actually, my car does have park distance control, so all I have to do is put the car in reverse if they ask for a demonstration.
I looked at my rear plate again. The lip of the trunk lid hangs down low enough that I don't think it's going to be that noticeable. (I drive a BMW 5.) I'll probably go ahead and install it.

The one thing you need to careful of when installing the rear shifter is that it does not block the license plate illumination lights. I had this problem and we recently discussed how I fixed this problem in this thread.

Re: 9500ci Without Rear Laser Shifter
I remember seeing a light kit from Bel made specifically for their rear jammer. It was like $29 and attached to the bottom of the head if my memory serves me right. If I run across the link again I'll post it.
