For the best radar detection, mount high.
WOW, talk about something that is asked so many times. Mount it high as you can and hardwire it. Keeps it cool, better range, and hides its from LEO and thieves.
Exactly.
I saw some suspicious looking fella supposedly talking on a cell phone and was looking inside my car without bending down. I was watching from a small distance to see what he was doing... My V1 is mounted high though so he didn't see it (if he was going to do anything in the first place.)
Exactly how high are we talking?
As high as your roof will let you :D.
Really.
Good question, we all say high. Mine is 65 inches off the ground. GMC pickup, so high for car drivers might be low for me.
does the 3 inch tint on top of the windshield really affect the detection range or is it not that noticeable?
I would also like to know about the 3-inch tint that my Jetta has - could it affect performance?
I'll give the same advice I was given - find a stationary radar source and test behind the tint and below, if you get the same readings then you're fine.
Factory tint is usually fine because it doesn't have little metallic balls in it. The after market tint you can apply yourself is what usually messes it up.
Do what zerbey said.
It is very definitely not that simple. That's why it is almost completely unheard of to see a serious enthusiast mount a detector in the middle of their windshield. It is total fail on every level to do so.
Give your radar detector the best view of the road and the best chance to detector radar. Laser detection is a not a useful feature, other than to be notified of when to pull over. Give your radar detector the best view of the road, up high.
High, as possible. Advice, like most posters on this forums, backed by testing and/or real world experience.
Being an aesthetic freak may have cost me a timely warning about a year ago. I'll never know. I got a Chotis RVM mount and invisicord to make a very neat (i cant help myself) installation. Overall, it raised the installation of the unit a mere 20 inches or so from its previous installation.
JUST FROM THIS CHANGE, my 9500ix has added four [false] signals to its database just on my daily commute.
Mount it high. Increases the RD range, hides from thieves if behind the tint band, and keeps it cooler.
Forget laser detection...it's that simple:D
