Radar detector with direct amplification: no LO-leakage???

Dear all!

First of all, sorry for my English.

This site (sorry in Russian) is offering radardetectors which use "direct amplification" instead of superheterodyne. By me (maybe I'm wrong)
it should mean that there is no LO-leakage at all as there is nothing to leak.
The price is from 12 to 30 USD. BTW, they sell STi for more than 800 USD. :shock:

What do you think about that?

I can try to get one and send it to DET for testing...

P.S. I've done some search here - nothing about direct amplification.

Previous non-superhet RDs had very poor detection range. Unless they have made a quantum leap in direct conversion circuits, I would not expect adequate performance from them. And they probably won't detect Ka band at all.

That is not to say that direct conversion circuits cannot be improved, but that has not happened so far. RD mfrs. use superhet circuits for a reason.

Indeed, a superheterodyne reciever is far more powerful than a crystal set like the original Fuzzbuster.

The cases of the RD's at the site you linked look like Whistlers... I'm not sure if they really are directly amplified then...

I made the conversion under Russian --> US

so thus STi (and V1, same price)= 934.58 USD

X50 Red / RX65 = 713.94 USD

all in all DAMED EXPENSIVE compared to the prices here in America and Canada

yeah I thought so but me being an ignorant american (whose Asian heritage is in Japan not Russia) was looking for a "r" for Russian Ruble not a "p"....shows how much I know.........thanks man

Well "direct amplification" is like a crystal radio. So there is no local oscillator to leak, since it isn't heterodyning the frequencies to make the LO.
