    Default Radar ownership question?

I've owned a few radar guns in the past and wanted to know if there is some kind of law against it in the state of Georgia? I'm not in law enforcement, and don't really want trouble if I do get pulled over.

I have owned Decatur Gen. I and II, but never really took it on the road and if I did it was always "undercover".

Any info someone could pass along would be great!

In GAFCC laws of course apply as they do throughout the land. Plus in GA you [i/]must[/i] be licensed to operate any Class 15 radar device.

    ***** EDIT: Oops! I meant Class 90, not Class 15! *****

I think the FCC requires you to have a license to use radar speed devices.

My understanding is that a license is required for a part 90 unit, anyone can operate a part 15 unit.

I know a lot of police in GA and none of them care about a non LEO like myself having a radar gun. Just try to make sure that it couldn't be taken that you are impersonating a LEO would be my advice. Now, I'm not suggesting that you actually get a radar gun and use it
    I'm just sharing my experiences.

I've got a Dodge Ram on 22's, so looking like a cop won't be happening.

You never know, especially with all of the new GSP cars/trucks/SUV's/motorcycles. Then again, I've never seen them with a Ram on 22's.

Owning a radar gun isn't illegal at all. Operating one can be, depending on the type. There are two types of radar guns in the eyes of the FCC:

FCC "Part 15" Radar Guns = Legal for anyone to operate, no License Required
FCC "Part 90" Radar Guns = Illegal to operate unless you are licensed

Operating a Part 90 radar gun without a license could potentially land you a year in jail and a $10,000 fine for the first offense. So, you can see why it might be desirable to use a Part 15 gun.

The bulk of police radar is "Part 90", like the K55's. Examples of Part 15 guns are most consumer grade guns such as Bushnells, and some police-grade guns like some Decatur handhelds and the MPH Z-Series and Speedgun (like the one in my avatar).

interesting, I wonder what the legality is on jamming a part 15 device(with another part 15 device that is)
