    Default Is this true????

I read somewhere that if you get caught in VA or DC or anywhere else that detectors are illegal, all you have to do is cut the wire or smartcord with scissors or wire cutters because the police officer must test the unit with their radar gun. Obviously you cant test the unit that wont power on. The unit has to react to their radar gun before they can take it from you and fine you.

good question, when i got a ticket from a LEO in VA he took my cord too when he took it back to his car. That would imply he might test it.

Exactly. I was going to trade in my 9500i for an sti driver but I think I'll keep my 9500i and drive around with scissors. I'd rather cut my $5 hardwire kit than replace my $450 detector.

For a $90 fine is it worth it to replace the $29.95 + shipping hardwire kit?

I don't know f this would work but I have heard some people mention it - have two detectors with you - a good one you actually use and a crappy one you bought at a yard sale or some such. When/if you get busted, give the cop the crappy one. Has anyone ever pulled this off successfully or think it might work? Just a thought.

I thought you get the fine and in addition, they take the unit from you

Hey CJR238, did the leo confiscate the unit from you or did he give it back?

He was very nice and told me that he would give it back before he took it. He must have thought I was crazy, I was so happy it wasn’t a speeding ticket.

If it’s hard wired I doubt he can do anything to test it.

well if you really want to know, try to find a list of compiled statues from the virginia general assembly or motor vehicle code. see if you can find any relevance.
