Thread: Ka band

  1. #1

    Default Ka band

I'm sure ka band is in use in other applications such as aircrafts or something because its a microwave frequency. my question is there someway to build your own ka band receiver from aircraft equipment or such that would pick up the source of ka band farther than a v1?

I'm sure you *could* build your own. But, it would be quite expensive to build one that was better than any of the top RD's. It would also take a TON of ingenuity and time to do this. The bottom line is that the time and money it would take to build your own would be much more than just purchasing a top RD.

I'm sure if you throw enough money and space at it, you can build a more sensitive Ka band receiver. It's a question of why?

Or so you can design a detector that will show up as the absolute best in all current GOL testing (which test range only) even if the actual thing is worthless in the real world.

The military uses long range radar detection in many applications, nothing you're going to fit in a tiny box mounted on your dash though. Isn't the entire nose cone on many old military aircraft completely devoted to nothing more than radar detection equipment and capabilities, and entire rooms full of equipment only for this purpose on board ships complete with massive spinning antennas up on top side.

Not to mention that most air search/airborne radars fall between 400MHz and 2GHz. Some shorter range targeting radars (higher resolution) are X band, but thats the closest they come to traffic radar frequencies.

If you want that, just throw off Ka guard on the V1 and it'll alert to any burst of Ka any length it sniffs out. That'll probably give it a few hundred feet more range or more, as GOL tests at 25mph, and won't tell the story of its real-world performance.

"Down East Microwave" They got up and down converters for everything. Prolly find something to convert it to down so you can use a CB or something. But since Ka is wide banded whatever you use will have to scan and do it pretty fast.
