Default Geico and the beloved radar detector

    Hey guys,

I unfortunately have geico insurance, and I was just told if you have a radar detector in the car and cause an accident then they won't cover you. They told me that this applies to every state.... Is this true? I told the guy, "So you're telling me if I get into an accident it's in my best interest to throw the detector out of the car window?" HAHA he didn't like that idea.

    Any thoughts?

If they refused to cover you in an accident because of an RD, I'd sue their fat gecko a$$.

But Geico is evil, and anti-RD. I'd drop them and switch to ANYTHING else. They buy radar and laser guns and give them to police departments so they can issue more tickets, resulting in more rate increases. They are the ultimate scam insurance company.

I dont know if I believe that just because you have a radar detector in your car during an accident they would refuse to cover you. But if it is true that I would for sure switch insurance companies because thats just dumb.

Unless that's in the policy, you could sue them for bad faith. That potentially could cost them a lot more than not covering your accident. It wouldn't surprise me though.

How would they even know you had a RD in the car? My wife had an accident several years ago while we were still with Geico and they paid without even asking (paid more than they had to, actually, due to their own incompetence, which was why I promptly dropped them and won't ever go back to them). Progressive isn't any better, BTW, so if you're thinking about going there, don't waste your time.

If you want to find a good insurance company, ask your local high(er) end bodyshops.

This statement sums up Geico's policy towards Radar Detectors:

''If you want to have a radar detector and speed, so be it,'' said Tony Nicely, Geico's president. ''Just go find your insurance elsewhere.''

Geico has been Anti-RD ever since the National speed limit was raised from 55 to 65. They have assisted numerous Police Departments with speed enforcement equipment and training. IMHO just a scam to artificially justify an increase in premiums...

Sounds like good advice there, Mr. Nicely. You know something? If everyone takes your advice, your crooked insurance company will go out of business. What a moron. I wonder if he has insurance through his company, and if he's gotten any speeding tickets. Heck, he probably has a Cobra in his Bentley....

I want to get a different insurnace company... he said that it's in the policy and I quicly responded, "How do I get rid of that clause." Bottom line- you can't. Don't ever go with geico because they're a bunch of crooks.

For the time being, I wouldn't worry too much. Accident reports do not include details about radar detectors. Also, you would be able to recover your RD before the insurance company could ever get a look at the car. That is, if you are physically up to it. If not, you could have a problem.

When my car got wrecked, I had most of my countermeasures out before I left the scene of the accident.
