Default New to forum-question about Passport 9500ix

Hey guys, just a quick question that some may be able to answer. I was driving home today on a 4 lane road with plenty of stoplights. Had my radar on, and a cop was coming the other way and clocked me going 69 in a 50. Radar didn't go off until about 3 seconds before the cop passed me (not enough time to slow down). My question is, should my 9500 pick that up a little earlier or are my expectations too high? Any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated.

Looks like you got owned with instant on. Leo's can I/O you while driving and since you were the only car in front of him you never had chance.

Instant on radar is when a LEO keeps his radar off until he sees his target, then turns it on when that target is in range. That's what happened to you. In this situation, there is no radar to detect, since the LEO has it in "Hold" mode. Once he turns it on, your 9500ix now has something to detect, which it did, but by then it's too late.

Escort has recently announced a radar detector add-on that might be able to help in these types of situations. It's called Escort Live!(I didn't put the exclamation point in there, Escort did). What it does is hooks up to your 9500ix and links to your smartphone via bluetooth and basically links Escort radar detectors together. So, if some Escort radar detector user up ahead detects instant-on radar, it will show up on your smartphone display, warning you of the potential danger ahead. Opinions vary on if this new product will work well or not. We shall see.

Thanks for the help guys. Not gonna lie, I don't really know much about my radar detector or the subject in general. I just had to buy one because I've had alot of problems with tickets (I'm in a Chicago suburb with a commute into the city).

If you're going to be driving 20 over the speed limit you need to have cars in front of you. The cop will be checking their speed and you'll get an alert in advance when he turns on the radar unit. Also, be very careful when you get a KA band alert, even for a second or two, since that's almost always a cop. You can get KA band falses from a few sources, but the vast majority of times it's a LEO.

If you had your radar on, you should have clocked him too, since he was probably going just as fast as you, and then wrote him a ticket.
