Default Need A New Radar Detector

So my 12 year old Beltronics V940 finally give out. R.I.P. I figure I got my moneys worth for that long of service. Anyways, I am in search of a new radar detector. At first I looked at the Whistler CR85, but was disappointed to know that it is just a Pro-78SE in a nicer looking shell. Does it still have the issues with the X to K and X to Ka-Band confusion? I had a Whistler and if you turned off X-Band and went by a source it would false K-Band. If I turned both X-Band and K-Band off and went by a source it would false Ka-Band. If this is still in issue then I won't even consider it. I like Beltronics as they have served me well in the past and present. My only issue with Beltronics is the lack of ramp up. It doesn't seem to have any ramp up. It will go from one bar to full and stay there. I also looked in to the juggernaut V1 and have always wanted one. Unfortunately, I read a review and it is missing one thing that I absolute want: Frequency ID. I also read that it is so sensitive that radar signals bounce around and it will alert you to more then one LEO even though there is only one. I love the V995's Frequency ID as I am able to tell immediately whether it is a true LEO or a false. Example: K-band LEOs are always 24.148GHz or 24.150GHz while door openers are 24.120GHz or 24.128GHz and it detects Cobra radar detectors at 33.498GHz. My state does not use 33.6GHz at all, photo or red-light enforcement either. I would say it is about 80% 35.5Ghz, 10% 34.7GHz, and 10% K-Band. So after writing a ridiculously long post I have come to the Escort 8500X50 with blue display. How is the ramp up compared with Beltronics? Does it also have the five digit Frequency ID? Is this a good upgrade from the old S4 V940? I did look into the Redline to but just do not want to spend that much money. I can get the 8500X50 for around $250. Buy it or do you folks have a better one in mind?

I have a X50 Black, a classy unit and best deal for your money, ramp is OK, pretty darn good on Ka, and has spec display, you will notice a real improvement on range from your 940 Bel, however, I know you don't want to spend the money on RedLine or even Max but the performance is unreal compared to anything else (baring V1). The reactivity of a Segmented Redline is so much quicker and even with RDR Off it falses less than my X50 to cheap leaky detectors.

I feel inadequately protected now when running X50 compared to my RedLine - If you can possibly afford it get it or the Max. Also check out the 2012 ECCTG test at RDF.org to see how RD's rated - It was before RedLine update which is much improved.

Read up on detector Reactivity, it is a real eye opener!

I have a black x50 distance is good but I'll get full signal about 1/4 mile away not very accurate compared with the v1 will go full as soon as your right on it!. X50 or it's bel sibling is the best bang for the buck. Also I think the v1 has spoiled me but rear detection of the x50 is a absolute joke!!!

well you could always build a rear radar deflector for you x-50.

Someone actually marketed one eons ago.

It was a little slanted reflective surface one could mount under your detector that redirected back door radar signals into the front antenna

Buttom line is if you have a good detector you got to save the money or finance it there is also the option of refurbished units. To be honest radar detectors in the USA are so much cheaper then what they are in new zealand. in usa 500 for a bel magnum in nz 1000 dollars for a bel magnum. They pay them self's off over time man they well worth it , even if they save you from a few tickets

Many people (including me) are loving the X65 S7. If you can find any of these units on eBay, go for it. If you are interested, you should wait until the official Beltronics Ebay Store has a refurbished S7. They go for 199 USD and come with warranty!

I don't know if you already purchased a radar detector or not, but you would be best served getting an Escort Passport Max. They are still filling pre-orders, so if you ordered it today, you most likely wouldn't get it until the end of August. (They pre-sold over 2,000 of them I believe)

I have one & I absolutely LOVE IT! I had an Escort SmartRadar, that's what the Max replaced. I also have an Escort Passport iQ (which is a full fledged GPS unit with a Passport 9500ix built into it), gave that to my parents. Prior to that I had an Escort Passport 9500ix.

BingoPlayerz - I had several RDs selling for under $200 and none came close to the V1. I ended up with. The two top performing RDs are the RedLine and V1. If you spend most of your time on interstates, the RedLine is best. Otherwise, a V1 will do fine on other roads and its performance is about 10-15% under the RedLine on interstates. RedLines go for about $500, V1s $400 and a refurbished V1 around $250-300.
