Default Which of these two to get?? Cobra vs Uniden

I know cobra has a great name in Cb's, but I think uniden does to.

I've narrowed my CB down to these two/three

    Uniden PC78ELITE
    Uniden PC68ELITE

    or
25 WX NW ST Mobile CB

For Antenna - I plan on Getting lil Wil

Which do you think and why? Any bad decisions that I could make with these - why so? Criticism accepted.

Most of my technician friends think the older Cobras were great but the newer ones not as good.I think both radios are ok but I would go with the Uniden.I have come to this conclusion on the advice from people who earn their living by working on radios.Good luck on what ever you decide.

You can use any CB Radio you want, as long as is not broken, in good condition and you like how it looks like... BECAUSE IS NOT THE CB RADIO THAT DOES THE JOB FOR YOU, IS THE ANTENNA THAT WILL GIVE YOU A MEDIOCRE OR VERY GOOD Tx/Rx RANGE...
Personally I'm using a Midland CB Radio, digital and portable (but in the car connected to the cigarette lighter) AND a Wilson 5000 with a short-load (1ft shorter than the original 62' whip so I have easier access to low-clearance parking lots) that gives me an average of 15 miles of STRONG Tx/Rx signal (open road)...
Once again, the better (and longer the antenna, but the short-load has the very same performance as the original whip) the more range of strong signal you are able to get... CB Radio itself, so the box, the unit, has nothing to do with the range unless you spend more money on an amplifier (ILLEGAL by FCC rules), but this amplifier is a separate box (receiver) and comes between the CB and the antenna so will take more space in your vehicle...
    Best of luck

Range is important but the radio can make a huge difference if you do a little tunning.I always turn the wattage down to 2 watts and either turn up the modulation or cut the modulation limiter.I will then key up 2 watts but when I talk it will jump to 6-10 watts depending on the radio. At the maximun range I will be at least twice a loud.I don't care what kind of a signal I give you as long as you can hear me.

No question that ANY CB Radio can be modified to fit anybody's personal prefferences (personally, I'm very happy with my Midland and see no reason to spend money, as I'm not a do-it-yourself in radio field, in modify it entirely) but first you have to buy a CB unit, ANY CB unit, either is Midland, Cobra, Uniden, Texas Ranger, Galaxy, etc. And just then do the changes...
I recall a moment in South Texas, I20 to El Paso, I gave out a smokie alert with the mile marker, I was on the westbound, and right away I got a "another one on my side", so a smokie on the eastbound way, but the reply came from about 12-14 miles away, he heard me, I was able to hear him and with a very good, clear signal, no static at all (obviously all flat terrain 360 dgrs around us)... so why would I bother starting working inside the CB circuit when everything works great    of course my Wilson 5000 is performing greatly, no complains so far... that's why I advice people to concentrate less on what CB to get, base or handheld, cheap or expensive, but get a very, very good antenna that will give you the longest range possible... these are my views only based on my personal, real-life experience and ask nobody to follow them at all

I honestly don't know anything about CB's. I understand how they work and the lingo and such. I wouldn't knwo enough to do any modding or any of that ****. I don't want a huge whip so that is why I am going with lil Wil. Seems to be the best for the buck. Could I get someone to explain to me how to tweak it and such?

It's pretty straight forward, just plug-and-play... connect the antenna to your CB and you're in the business... if you're going to use the original Wilson whip that comes with, you don't need any adjustment/tunning, but to be sure ask the people where you buy the stuff from what they recommend about... a short-load like the one I'm using for my 5000 requires a one-time antenna tunning on ch. 19, operation done with a SWR unit...
    Best of luck

    I don't understand.

So if I get the Lil wil and any of these 3 - I won't need any SWR checking done with it, but if I do what with it now I will? Please clarify.

A CB antenna works with ANY CB Radio, it's up to you what antenna and CB Radio to get... a brand-new CB Radio never needs any tunning nor a brand-new CB antenna IF you're going to use its ORIGINAL whip (the one that comes with the antenna base)... the Wilson antenna base comes in a box but the whip you will get it separately (it doesn't fit in the box with the antenna base)... only if you want to use a different whip (bought separately) that will require an aditional SWR reading, but using the ORIGINAL equipment, CB and the antenna, you don't need any SWR tunning...

I have to disagree with one point here. You should always check swr on any antenna installation.Swr can change depending on where you place it on your vehicle. The antenna maker may give you a guide but there are many things that can cause high swr even if the antenna is factory set. Will your setup work out of the box?Probably but if you want to maximize your setup you will need to check swr. There is some good info here: http://www.firestik.com/Meas-SWR.htm#Setting%20SWR
