    Not true... http://www.wilsonantenna.com/w5000.htm

"The Wilson 5000 is the top performing base loaded CB antenna for the automobile. Wilson used the basic design of the Wilson Trucker 5000 with the exclusive low loss coil and proven performance qualities of the Wilson 1000. The Wilson trademark of designing an antenna with maximum efficiency is continued in the Wilson 5000."

And let's forget about the ducky issue

Well, I don't really need the handheld. I guess I'll just go with my original plan of getting a Midland 1001Z, and a Little Wil antenna. How much does it usually cost to tune the antenna?

BTW, the Little Wil magnet mount should hold on at highway speeds, right?

I'm not familiar with the specific radio you mention, but I can guarantee you that you will see an exponentially larger amount of range with your Little Wil than you ever would with a handheld and the rubber ducky antenna that it comes with, REGARDLESS of brand or model. Also, the strength of the Little Wil magnet is wonderful. Trust me, it isn't going anywhere.

That's right on the money and 100% accurate. I can't stress how much of a disappointment these handheld CB's are. No joke....one time a friend had one and we were conversing. His car got no more than 500 feet from mine and it was as if nobody was talking to me anymore. They're not worth the pieces it takes to build them.

What if they are used in conjunction with a good antenna. I was thinking about getting a magnet antenna and a handheld CB radio. That way I can get everything running quickly before a trip.

What should I look for when buying a radio? I don't care to transmit for miles. I just want reception to be good.

I apologize for not clarifying myself and for my potentially misleading post. A handheld CB, I would assume, could perform just fine when used with a good antenna that mounts OUTSIDE of the vehicle. Your idea of a magnet mount antenna and a handheld CB would work just fine, I would think. The antenna really is more important than the radio itself as far as CB goes.

Using a handheld Midland 75-822 CB Radio teamed-up with a very powerful Wilson 5000 for almost 2 years now and very happy with the Tx/Rx reception range, up to 15 miles on the open road, but the average is about 10 miles for the open road reception... also using a Wilson short-load instead of the original whip, the short-load is 1ft shorter (but still the same very good reception), good for low-clearance underground garages...
