Question Hand Held CB, with outside antenna

I am thinking about buying the Cobra Roadtrip Hand-Held CB Radio with Antenna. (Cobra Roadtrip Hand-Held CB Radio with Antenna - Model HH-ROADTRIP at Sears.com). It is for a good price, and only comes with an antenna I can put outside of my car. The antenna is magnetic so it will not damage my brand new G35(and I can take it off at will). Does any one have any experiences with portable CB's? Also, Midland makes a hand held, do those work better?

You'll be lucky to even talk to your rabbit with that thing unless you get a good quality, full- size antenna with real coax on it. Even with that, you're still looking at pretty low performance. Don't count on talking more than a mile with it under most conditions.

Best bang for the buck on antennae is the Wilson's. Lil Wil is the smallest, and will work just fine as a temporary talker. But overall, I would never recommend those handheld radios. The whole point is to get distant advanced warning of cops. There's really no distance to be had out of these things.

Here’s one CB that I’ve had my eye on for a while.--> Cobra 75 WX ST I realize it’s something that most CBers would laugh at but like the fact that it’s small, & that you can put it into your glove box if not using it.

I suggest a Uniden 510XL for a compact 'no frills' CB for the average roller-skate.

I am looking at this too. I want something with range but only to use on road trips. I drive a 2003 BMW coupe (330ci) and I dont a big box mounted to my dash board. I can wire this thing in the glove box and take it out when using and slap a little wil with magnet on the trunk.

Does anyone know if this a good CB or at least worth $80 to try out?

i find the midland 75-822 to be a more versatile radio.
it has 2 different battery clips, one to put in regular disposable batteries and another for rechargeables (comes with plug-in charger). you use these clips when you're using it as a handheld. and then it also comes with a vehicle adapter clip that plugs into your cig adapter and an antenna plug

I've heard interference issues with the CB in the cig. lighter. (Can't remember if it was on here, or not.) Any thoughts versus hardwired? I believe it was the one thing holding me back from the HH Midland.

PS Can you hardwire that Midland?

There is no problem with ciggerette lighter power unless you are using extremely modified radio that is putting out alot of power a ciggerette lighter works
I have used a ciggerette lighter to power 2 of my cb radios (peaked and tuned uniden 510xl and stock cobra 29) no problems from my cig lighter

i strongly do not agree with people using any hand held CB radio or any radio for that matter that can not be easily peaked and tuned...CB radio manufacturers sell their radio's detuned as to manufacture doesn't want to get introuble with the FCC

Cobra dx19 or Uniden 510xl are both great no frills radio's when peaked and tuned and can easily powered by the cigerrette lighters
