Find a switched source of power that is on when the key is on and off when it isn't. Splice the positive wire in your cable to this. Send the neg over to ground. Place for convenience.

What type of car do you have? Most will have 2 power drops: 1 constant, one switched. They will be close to your firewall. If you can't find them, a quick way to do it is to buy some fuse taps at Autozone or something and tap into something like your windshield wiper fuse, or something else that will only come on when the key is in "ACC" or "RUN."
I tied mine into the keyed lead going into the stereo. On most aftermarket wiring harnesses, it'll be red.
Get one of those ice pick looking testers with the light bulb on the end and find a fuse that goes on with the ignition then off with the ignition.
Fuse taps work good like Arvetus said. Radio Shack has them also.
