    Default Remote display help

Ok, i just ordered me a new(refurb V1)with remote display. I know some members have changed the LED's to diffent colors both on their V1 and remote display. Anyways i wanted to try this but only on my remote display in case i screw up. Atleast my warranty wouldnt be voided.

    Any advice????

    -where to get the LED
    -What to do
    -step by step instructions

Even the information needed to do this yourself? I too would rather do this myself than pay out a ton of money for something so simple :?

It's not as easy as it seems. All I can say is you better be good at soldering. If you only want to make one, it will run you about $15 for the LEDs alone because of shipping and minimum order fees. Thats what I paid when I made the first one for myself. You also have to have all the tools and what not. Doing it 20 times before doesn't hurt either, lol.

Has anyone changed the LEDS in the V1 itself? Thats my only complaint about the V1, the visual band ID is crap at night.

Yes,that thread DOES have all you need, afterall I used it to do mine myself.

See the page linked in my signature.

Basically you want to order 1206-sized SMD LEDs in the colors you want. There are many to choose from, so you want as bright as you can (mcd) within reasonable cost. Digi-key is the most common store for electronics components though there are plenty of others. Their parts and stock change often, so some listed in that thread were not available. I'll paste my order listing below but similarly they may not be available. Because there is a minimum I ordered plenty of extras for future use. It may cost you $20 to do one, but for the same price you have enough to do five. I simply do not have the time and patience to do it for others, and there are a few others here that are happy to--but you wouldn't be looking at this if you weren't already proficient at soldering and hacking at things yourself, right?

Surface mount soldering is NOT easy, but because you are only dealing with an led with a connection on each side it is not difficult and you should be able to figure it out.

Here's what I ordered, and again they may not be available (and I had a few duplicates) so look through digi-key's catalog pages to make your own choice:

    1 5 5 0 0 160-1737-1-ND 0.55000 $2.75
    2 1 1 0 0 67-1866-1-ND 3.14000 $3.14
    3 5 5 0 0 404-1029-1-ND 0.46000 $2.30
    4 5 5 0 0 404-1030-1-ND 0.85000 $4.25
    5 5 5 0 0 404-1031-1-ND 0.44000 $2.20
    6 2 2 0 0 404-1039-1-ND 2.01000 $4.02
    7 5 5 0 0 160-1649-1-ND 0.40000 $2.00
    8 2 2 0 0 160-1643-1-ND 0.83000 $1.66

Ahh bless you, I'll order these and run them to my brother for soldering, he's an electrical engineer for the airforce so he _might_ be pretty decent at soldering (I'm the bum of the family you see )

Sounds like you got it in the bag. Im still not sure if i want to try it or not. I did however develop a plastic insert for where i switched my double din stereo for an aftermarket stereo. Well i fabricated a piece of plastic to feel in the gap and then Im going to custom mount y remout display in it. Should be nice. Just waiting on V1 to arrive but one i get it here and figure the demminsions i will post the pics.

I did something similar, the day I got my STi, I drilled holes into my double din "cover" (since the aftermarket stereo was only single) for the sound to go through as well as screw holes for the speakers mounting bracket...I was so pissed when I had to rip the dash out to take it all out again when I sent the STi back...*mutter*
