Question Have 3.863, any benefit to upgrade to 3.872?

I'm trying to gather info on 3.872 but it's tough to determine if it's "better" than 3.863. BTW will VR even do this kind of upgrade? Fee?

I would call and just ask if they would charge you. I would try to talk to Mike directly since he will be the most likely person to give a free upgrade, if not it's still $139 to upgrade.

Or go to http://www.valentine1.com/upgrades/ and put in your serial number. Pretty sure it'll tell you what upgrade you need and how much it'll cost.

That's usually associated with a major hardware upgrade or POP/Euro upgrade.

I would call and ask for Mike.

You might get less ghosting with 3.872, but otherwise I wouldn't throw a whole lotta money into this.

I mean, 3.872 units are solid units that perform superbly. (Very happy with mine)

ANY software version is still $139 to upgrade. I think from 3.858 and up it says it's the latest but you still have to pay. I called VR and THEY told me that.

139 for a software upgrade? **** no thanks. If it was a hardware upgrade ok, but just software a bit pricey. Unless there is clear evidence that 3.872 is worth it compared to 3.863. I don't have much ghosting on it and I'm happy with the ranges. Sometimes it's a bit iffy on off axis 35.5 Ghz though.

And as for asking for Mike, I don't know. I usually don't like to plead/beg for free stuff.

The upgrade to 3.872 is not just firmware. The digital temperature compensation board was relocated inside the horn assembly, whereas before it was outside the horn assembly. There had to be some PC board changes to accomplish that. VR does not consider that to be a major hardware upgrade, therefore it does not show up on their upgrade page.

I agree on the 35.5 off-axis peformance BTW. On-axis it is just fine, but 15° off-axis and means a big reduction in range.

I was in your shoes a few months back as I too had a 3.863. I sold it on the bay and the funds ($70 out of pocket) used towards the purchase of my current 3.872. I do remember the performance on Ka and K being better than the 3.863. Then again it might have due to the fact that the 3.863 was 2.5~3yrs old...who knows.
