    Default help with settings

just purchased a whistler pro 58 that will be arriving in a few days and had a question about what settings I should use for city driving and highway trips. I read that VG2 should be turned off unless in an area where RDs are illegal (VA). What other settings should be used for driving in the city and what settings should be used for the interstate? I will be using it in NC if that helps at all.

Also, on an unrelated question, is it possible to mount the rd high (by the rearview mirror) without having to hardwire or have the power cord hanging down. Would like it to be stealthy as possible but am not electronically inclined enough to try and hardwire.

Default settings on the Pro-58 should be pretty good. I would avoid using city mode, stick to "City 1" or Highway.

VG2 should be disabled from the factory.

Unfortunately the lighter cord is not going to long enough to route it out of view, but anyone with a little experience installing car stereos can do it. There's plenty of people on the forum that are willing to help as well.

I run my Pro 73 (same detector, different features) like this:

    VG2 Off
    POP Off
    SR Off
    Voice On

I usually keep it in City 1 mode, but that depends. When I'm out in the country, I turn it to HIGHWAY. If I'm in a high false area, I go to City2.

It's a good idea to shut off VG2 detection unless in a VG2-prone area (in which case you shouldn't be using a Whistler detector before the new XTR's come out) because gas stations and other places tend to false VG2 and a VG2 "false" will shut off the detector circuitry for 30 seconds.

You can turn off POP to slightly boost the range of the detector (but the boost for me is negligible in real-world encounters) at the cost of more of those mini K falses and of course sacrificing all your POP detection.

Hey StealthCB, what do you mean when you say SR off? I don't recognize this? :?

I recommend city 2 mode on trips but if you know that x band might be used then city 1 or highway might be what you need.

safety radar is basically dead I really don't know why they still include this feature. A long time ago I remember a few isolated areas where they where using safety radar and it would pop up with info on the detector. But its all but gone now.

yeah, safety radar is very rare... I did drive through one stretch of highway that was blanketed for a mile in "SPEED ENFORCED", but that's the only encounter of SR I ever got.

Sometimes off-tune K-band radar (i.e. some speed signs) can trigger SR (CAUTION) instead of a strength display, so I turn off SR for that reason. Minor cosmetic reasons...

thanks for the help. One more question: If I fins someone who can hardwire the unit for me, will the wiring be good for any detector if/when I upgrade? What I mean is will I simply be able to unhook the whistler and insert another detector or will I need to find someone to rewire everything again? Also, anyone know who would do this? I was thinking maybe car installation places? In NC if that helps
