Default switching bands on a whistler?

    Hello,
Can anyone using Wistler tell me if I can switch off K, Ka and Laser on a model? Only X-band is used on my way to work. I saw some programmable feature on 1793 which claims it is possible, but not clearly advertised or stated by Whistler. I've had $300 Beltronics which gave SELFCAL error message so I'm not willing to spend big bucks again for non reliable Bel's units for fairly the same performance. May be even Whistler is better on x-band detection..?

    Thanks

You can shut off K, Ka, and Laser on the 1793SE.
    Why would you want to?
It does not improve the sensitivity.

Do you get excessive alerts from K band door openers?
Do you get excessive Ka alerts from other radar detectors in your area?
Do you get excessive Laser alerts from an Airport?

If the answer to the above questions is NO, I would simply leave them all on just incase your local law enforcement uses one of them in the future.

Thanks for the answer. I think I'll go for this particular Whisler model which, above all, is less than $100 now.

The answer is YES - I was getting lots of K-band falses near Gas stations and Laser -alerts sometimes near/in tunnels with my Bel 990i. And in the country (East Europe) I'm driving they use only X-band so I don't need other false signals. I think X-band falses are pretty much enough sometimes, especially in the cities.
If new treath comes I can always turn the necessary band on.

After a research I found out that all these models do have Band selection option:

    1770
    1776/1778
    1788/1788R
    1793SE
    1790SE
    XTR 280
    XTR 425
    XTR 560

Which one should I go for considering X-band sensitivity factor only? Do you think these differ on X-band detection at all?

I can tell you the 1793SE is very good in terms of X-band sensitivity... I own one and live in south NJ, so X-band is my most common threat.

Anyone of the the models based on the same chassis as the 1793SE... maybe Michael B can give you the exact models, but I believe we're talking everything in the upper 17xx line.

    The 1776 / 1778 / 1793 have the same X band sensitivity.

My wife likes the 1776 for the display

I like the 1778 for the voice and display and auto-dim

The 1793 is great also especially if you need a compass.

Thanks, I finally received my 1793 SE. I'll be testing it aginst my usual threats to compare it with the Beltronics 990i I own.
