Filter 2 does not eliminate those erratic Ka9 false alerts nor does using KaRSID instead of KaMaxID. I still can't tell if performance degrades when I use Filter 2. I've gotten great detections while using Filter 2.
There may be something with your vehicle's electrical system thats setting off the Ka9 bursts.
There are several Pro78SE owners here reporting the ka9 alerts.

I've had several. Always while driving through a densely populated area. Can't think of any while on the open highway, except this:

I own an XTR-690SE and also have an XTR-695SE that Michael B sent to me. Both also have the exact same Ka9 problem as my Pro78SE.

I think it was very nice of Michael B. to send you a XTR-695SE. I just want you to know that I am jealous of the attention you got from him. :o

Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
I will report my findings when i get my Pro 78 SE. In filter 2 my Pro 78 is very very quiet even through Dallas/Ft.worth and Houston area. I'm sure the SE is more sensitive in the I/O and quick trigger window due to Ka Max. Mike B. said falses may increase due to the Ka max feature.

It was certainly nice of him to send me that unit, but remember, I did buy two SEs for no other reason than to test them, which I'm probably going to lose quite a bit on when I try to resell them.
I'm actually sending his 695SE and my 690SE back to him next week so he can try to figure out why my 690SE seemed to interfere with my 9500ci during the over-the-hill test that Freebird and myself performed. My Pro78SE is still going through some more testing.

If you put aside those Ka9 false alerts, are you getting any kind of good radar detections from your Pro 78se? I'm under the impression that the SEs you have are performing very poorly for you.

Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
Hey DJ I have been by that local 35.5 Suburban twice in the last week and my 78SE has been silent both times. I used to always pick him up rolling with his radar in constant on. Have you encountered him lately with his radar off?

Yeah, they perform poorly for me. I didn't get anything near what your videos show. I mean, not close. It's probably a combination of tons more traffic, terrain and location and a s**tload more false alerts. If I attempted to use filter mode, I'd get a full blast Ka alert about every 15-20 minutes or so. I couldn't deal with that.

I don't think I've ever seen either of those two Suburbans without their radar on. I even detect them while they're parked for lunch. Hmmmm, the next time I see one of them, I'll let you know if they have their radar on or not. Those things are usually rolling 35.5 test sources. :D

I was afraid you were gonna say that:(. Now I am worried my unit is dead on 35.5. Gonna have to take out 2 units and hunt him down and do some testing.
I was jazzed both times when I saw him. I was gonna drop in behind and test, but both times my unit was Silent.

I think your unit is a lemon swap it out ! One way to tell is buy a cheap whistler and then take it back. Whistlers park on 35.5 for a short time at start up. I'm not saying Mike B is wrong ! I'm just saying some things have issues. For example your car won't run right then you take it to a mechanic and it runs fine while he is driving it.

We have locals that run 35.5 and the Station is a few miles away. I will just cruise by and most of the time they have a unit left on in the parking lot. If it is dead I am gonna ask to swap it out since my performance has been eratic to say the least.:(
I actually like my 78SE more than my STI due to its features I prefer. I wish it performed as well as my STI without the ka9 falsing.

Once a month I play with my other Whistlers to see if Ka band is in working order on the Pro 78. Every major road trip i do a factory reset. I have a big issue with Laser cruise control falses here until i send it to Mike B for a fix. I run FILTER in the city and get maybe 1-2 Ka falses in 2 weeks with a population on 250,000 residents. I rarely see KA 9 falses ! FILTER 2 is very quiet !!! I have no drive time with the SE platform and its a totally different RD.

On average, I might get 1 or 2 of those Ka9 false alerts per day even when in default filter mode. Sometimes more, sometimes none. It's not bad considering that I've been putting a lot of unnecessary miles on my car conducting radar search. Maybe I should feel lucky that I do get good radar detections and a lot less false alerts than others.

I normally would perform the factory reset just before I make a settings change as a precaution. The bad thing about it though is that I loose the stored LSID memory.

Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
Mike B. told us he can not filter out every leaky RD out there. There are many many cheap brands importing in to the United states. Cobras alone i see a average of 30 or more detectors a day including 5-10 year old units. Even the V1 falses to Cobras maybe not as bad as the Whistler. I'm sure Mike B has the same Ka false issue but chooses to leave Ka max on for better Ka detection and Filter mode for rapid response time ( one of the best in the industry) to Quick trigger or Instant on. I guess it depends in your area what other motorists are using such as very old Uniden Rd's,older Cobras,PNI detectors,Early warning, Older BEL's even leak K band. I also have noticed running beside another Whistler unit has set the other guys Whistler off cause you can see the LED periscopes light up at night. Maybe its our own brand clashing with each other? Try to locate the source or brand of RD that it lights up on Ka9 and maybe Mike B can put in in the the new REV upgrade. I can live with the falses. Maybe the source is Communication/microwave towers? Mine lights up on K band to towers around here in Filter mode.
Mike B :
KaMax may increase Ka alerts from some other detectors and that is why we left it a selectable option.
I cannot get rid of all the radar detector falses unless I increase the validation time to 800ms or more like most of the other brands do.
Filter 2 will validate in 500ms on average

The V1 has the quickest response in the industry and I only see maybe one or two Ka band falses per month on my V1. VR seems to have figured out how to do it, why can't Whistler and Belscort figure it out? Belscorts have horrible response time, Whistlers false too much.

Your area could be the perfect test ground for Michael B. to try to figure out the cause of those Ka9 alerts. There must be something in your environment that is triggering them. Might be easier to narrow down the possibilities when you get a Ka9 alert every 15-20 minutes.

Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
I am almost certain the ka9 falses are coming from other rd's. I only get them in heavy traffic. I had the same falses in heavy traffic in San Antonio and Houston. This would explain why Mike you are not getting as many as we do here in LA due to lighter traffic in your area I drove around an hour this morning, traffic was light and I did not have 1 ka false. I was able to locate a local running 35.5 and my unit is working fine.:)

You're probably right. During a typical drive on any LA freeway, you and I probably pass more cars and RDs in an hour, than mikeslc passes in a month.

They have heavy traffic at morning and evening rush hours, but it is noticeably lighter than here in his videos.

I've been to LA many many times and I know how bad it could get. But, we do have heavy traffic here as well. Maybe there are a lot more Cobra RD users out there in LA.

None of this Ka band false alert stuff is about traffic jams. Whatever causes these false alerts, it seems to be about poplation, cars, RDs, towers or something of that nature. Basically, the more the people, the worse the false alert problem seems to be on these Whistlers. You obviously don't have near the problem with these false alerts there in Salt Lake City, as Freebird and I have seen here in LA. That makes sense, because you can't really compare the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_Lake_City"]Salt Lake City Area[/ame], with a population of about 1.2 million, to that of the Greater Los Angeles Area, with a population of about 18 million. That number rises to more than 21 million, if you include the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego"]San Diego Area[/ame], where I visit several customers quite often, including my largest.

Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
I would have to add a Filter 3, 4, and 5 to get rid of those alerts and make the response timing more in line with some of the other brands but the downside is that the ability to alert to brief signals of radar would be hampered as well just like the some of the other brands.

VR seems to be able to be both incredibly responsive, yet very selective. I'm curious if you know why.

You just might have to modify djrams80's XTR-690SE and the XTR-695SE when he send them back to you to look at. Add a Filter 3, 4 and maybe all the way to Filter 10:D and then send it back to him to test.

Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
I'm curious on Valentine also about the less Ka false alerts. Does Valentine have a patent on Ka falses? I would rather my Whistler chirp every once in a while than not at all. I can live with the falses. I'm working on a demo on Ka falses and communication/Microwave towers i found one that sets off my Pro 78 on Ka band. At least on the SE you can tell if its a false or not by the Ka id frequency. My Pro 78 i have to guess who has the leaky RD or radar source ahead.

Re: Pro 78se 35.5Ka video 9/3/2009
It appears to me V1 uses the J-out to buy more filter time with the ka guard. It alerts quickly to possible LEO ka signals and continues to analyze after alert, thus throwing the j-out flag if it feels the signal is a false from an RD. Belscorts do it differently, analyzing all signals and only reporting if it passes their filtering, thus making them slow in reporting the QT. Whistler has selectable filtering that even on filter 2 still lets some falses thru, and filter 3 4 or 5 would make them like a Belscort. Looks like you cant have your cake and eat it too. I would rather have a few ka9 falses than a silent missed instant on shot, but the V1 has the best package of delivering the best of both worlds no doubt. Hopefully all the brands will continue to improve in this area as Q/T technique continues to be used.

Nice reply and explanation ! Autoquiet will help on the Ka9 false. I'm sure Mike B will come up with a solution or fix in the future.

Not even remotely true. By the time the autoquiet takes effect, the alert is gone. It's too late by then anyhow, because you've probably crammed on the brakes already.

Would not be so bad but coming on like a point blank instant on shot at level 9 is :eek::eek::eek::eek::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: :(:(:(:(:(
City mode makes it more tolerable, cause you get 2 beeps and then its gone.
