    Default Please Help Noob :)

    Hello All,

I am new to the site, and new to the whole radar detectors. My friend had one and I noticed it helped him a lot with not getting tickets. I got a ticket and I don't really want to get one again .

I live in Southern California, mostly driving in LA county area.

    1) Is it legal to have a radar detector and/or laser jammer?

    2) What would you recommend me buying to protect myself for under $300 total?

    Thank you very much!

    1) Radar Detector is legal, Laser Jammer is not

    2) Whistler Pro-78 C or RX65 is about all you'll get for under $300

If you DO go with a laser jammer, please notice it is ONLY an equipment infraction in California and carries ZERO points on your license whereas speeding carriers 1-2 points.

Yes its legal to have a rd and laser jammer are illigal but its not a big deal.

The best rd for you for under 300 is.. I'm not sure. I would go with a V1 its 100 dollars more and will give you the best performance of any detector besides the 9500ci (but thats $1600)

But you read this forum and listen to what we have to say you can learn alot. Ask as much questions as you need because everybody on here is dedicated to helping other people. Thanks

Cali tickets are easy to beat anyways, looks like you're a college kid, I'd just go w/ the Pro-78, and if you happen to get laser ticket or something, can always fight it, tons of resources for fighting cali tickets on this board and from member advice.

But why would he want to risk it. That doesn't make since at all. Why doesn't he just get a good detector like the v1 or if he wants the 300 dollar range the rx-65 and not have to worry about stupid stuff like that. The pro-78 has no where near the capabilities needed in this leo world. Yes its a great detector for its price thats for damm sure but the detection range isn't good enough. Maybe for radar facing towards him but like a cop on a off ramp (cali does it a lot from what i've heard) and front facing radar then the pro-78 isn't going to do it, i'm sorry but why would you invest in a detector of any price and think of it as .. "if i get a ticket cali's system is the easiest to beat so i'll take the chance."

That doesn't seem like good advice to me but we all have our own personal opinions

I realize that you stated $300 as your high limit, but if you could swing it, I highly recommend the Escort 9500ix for SoCal. False alerts are ridiculous here and the 9500ix will eliminate them over time, so that your RD will basically only alert you if the new radar source is a LEO. Also, this unit will alert you to red light cameras, which, as you probably know, are everywhere in SoCal. Just my $.02.
