I don't know, but I'd say it's rather low where I live (Seattle area, WA). Carpooled today for 50 miles and only saw 2 cars with radar detectors. One was a Ricer Civic (dark tint so I couldn't see what they had), the other a Ford pickup running a 9500ix red display. Most other cars only had GPS's on their windshield. I had plenty of cars to look into from my passenger seat :P
I have yet to see the Escort's GPS Radar detector first hand... but if it's a big bulky GPS then I might have possibly seen 2...
Depends on your area I guess. I just drove 600 miles and I saw about 50.
Having said that, I almost don't see any in the city but a I see a fair amount on the freeway.
I believe it's generally pretty low. I see very few in cars at parking lots or on the road.
Maybe 5% of cars I'd say. Of that 5%,20% have a detector that is worth a damn.
My guess

I'm willing to make a guess that up to 20% of all American drivers have had a RD at one time or another.
Of that 20%, probably 15% have bought, to quote Radar Roy, "Cheap-Ass Counterfeit Detectors", or Cobras
The other 5% take their speeding seriously, and have a decent radar detectors that costs at least $150, probably mostly V1's and 9500ix. These are usually the people with porsches and lambos and ferrari's, or just people in general that have a lead foot and want maximum protection. They may or may not use Laser Jammers. Some of them will use CB's. Truckers also fit into this category, and they mainly do stealth setups.
Of that 5%, probably only 1% take it as seriously as we do, programming our RD's for maximum performance, knowledge of police tactics and equipment, consistently test their setups via counter-measure meets, and post on message boards. We are the ones that are most likely not to get busted by LEO's, because we drive, for the most part reasonably, use smart driving tactics, and since we know about police equipment, we know what kind of bear traps to watch out for and are constantly attentive. Most of us have anti-LIDAR setups of some kind, (And yes, VEIL is a form of LIDAR protection)
Some of us may have lead foots, some of us want all the information we can have on the highway, others genuinely consider RADAR/LIDAR a fun hobby.
Wow, I always wanted to be in the top 1% of something in my life. I never thought for a minute it would be Radar Detection. LOL
20 percent. No way. Your personal obsession clouds your good judgment.
I started

Most likely. But I did put the qualifier of "At one time or another", meaning they may or may not have had one in their car. It's probably likely a lot of people had cheapos in their cars, realized they didn't work, (or better yet, had no knowledge of how they worked) and got rid of them and are indoctrinated to believe that RD's don't work based on that one experience.
