    Default X/K confusion confusion

    78SE

    POP off
    Laser off
    X off
    Ka off
    SWS off

Running only K-band, going by a known X-band source, X-band and K-band will not go off. If I turn X-band on, drive by the same location, the 78SE will report a X-band hit.

What am I missing here? Does the X-band signal have to be max'd out for the K-band to kick in?

when did you buy your RD? I recently purchased my xtr 690se and I never had X to K confusion even when I drive past a very strong X band 9 full alert drone. I thougtht I was the only one without X K confusion. We might be the lucky ones.

I just bought it, the beginning of September 2010.

I'm in a K-band only area...and I just found (see below) in a document known as the "Unofficial Whistler FAQ".

    http://web.mit.edu/jdong/www/misc/whistlerfaq.pdf

"However, if K-band radar is a major threat in your area, be very very cautious about disabling or crippling X-band!. I’ve had one case where my XTR-690 filter out a valid K-band speed sign when X band was turned off! This is an extremely rare occurrence but still nothing to play around with."

Take your detector into a city and watch it go nuts.

This is a common problem with the Whistler XTR-690SE.

Here is a video of it doing the same thing you are talking about:

This video shows that there's no confusion in Escort's X-band range being better.

I sticking with you on this one...that my disabled X-band does not flip to K-band. X was just alerting its head off tonight by work and home (since I turned it on). There's nothing when I turn it off.

Side note...trying to change the settings while driving...I turned the LED off...thought I broke the damn thing!

As I wrote up based on information from Michael B, the X/K confusion only occurs in the presence of multiple X signals coming in and out of range (or a single X/K signal changing its frequency between when the detector identified its presence vs shifted its LO to try to detect which band it is).

When there's well-behaving and stable X/K signals, the detector will properly identify the band.
