Default XTR 695 X and K band confusion?

    Hello everyone,

I had an experience I wonder if anyone else has had. While driving down the expressway, my XTR 695 started to alert X band. This happened at a place where I never get false alarms. Over the hill, I saw a DOT work truck with it's flashers on. Now, whenever I've passed these trucks in the past, I'd get a K band alert from them. I really didn't think much of it, though.

When driving home that same day, I passed by a KNOWN K band speed measuring trailer, and again, my XTR alerted X band. Hmmmmm.....this time I made note of it.

The following day, as fate might have it...again I passed a DOT truck with it's flashers on, and again I was alerted to an X band. This time, however, I turned off the RD with its switch, and turned it back on. When coming home, I passed by the same speed trailer as the previous day, and my RD alerted properly with the K band. It seems turning off the RD with its switch allowed it to reset itself? Why didn't this happend when I turned off the car and thus the power to the RD?

    Any thoughts?

This is a known deal and has been documented before. The reason it happens from what I understand is that the X/K Band check is done in one sweep so there's a chance for it being mis-identified.

They use mostly K band in my area and I have turned off X band on my Pro 78 and haven't had any issues as far as detection goes from a real LEO.

That is an interesting video. What was the source of the alert? I'm wondering now if I have to be a little concerned when traveling. I usually don't pay a lot of attention to an X-band alert due to the fact that I haven't seen that around here...but I do travel through NC and OH sometimes where X band is alive and well, which is why I leave it enabled. However, there are LEO's around my small home town with K-band enforcement. What I really don't want to experience, is a K-band coming through as an X-band alert. I've always paid attention to K-band alerts, and if a LEO is out there monitoring with K-band, I don't ever want to see the detector confused and alert with X-band.

I had a response from Mike B from my (dated) Whistler FAQ:

    http://web.mit.edu/jdong/www/misc/whistlerfaq.pdf

On the 78, the X and K are on the same sweep but they are on the same harmonic
therefore the spacing is the same. To identify X vs. K we shift the LO and look
to see if the shift goes left or right.

Improper band ID can occur if there is another signal in the area that will
    confuse the shift.

Red face Re: XTR 695 X and K band confusion?

While i was already aware of the X & K band sweep situation... (per reading prior)

I have a few situations w/K band that's pretty much driven me to shut it off.

It appears our City Buses use K band +/-while approaching (certain) pick up points..

There's also been times where it goes off briefly while passing (certain) pick up points..

I also suspect some crosswalks trigger it. (motion detected lights/signal(s))

There's a series of (5-7) blocks (in a row) on 2 different streets parallel (both directions - 1 block apart) where (+/-because of X+K sweep) X+K will be going off for a solid 3-4min+ every time for the whole duration. Gah.

The amount of K falsing in general.. because of all of this combined has caused me to just shut it off. - I've tried to live w/turning it back on but it always comes right back around.

If the in-city stuff isn't enough, a few days ago i hopped on the highway with K on (thinking it won't be as bad) and nearly right away it's blowing off to whatever is ~100+ yards to the right of me. (falsing) - Ended up shutting it off out of frustration again.

Trying to use K here has been pretty frustrating. I don't live in a 'huge' city either.

I think some of the PD uses K at times but .. i nearly can't tell. +/-1-2+ times i thought for sure a LEO was on K but i wonder if it was just a coincidence. (+It could've been I/O?) - K seems to be blowing off more often now that it's summer too..

    - Ka on the other hand, i can confirm. Pretty decent coverage & doesn't often false.

I've also had it accurately pick up Laser, although i saw the cop ahead of time (knew the spot) & didn't leave a huge amount of time for reaction (typical, expected)

    Request: The capability of applying Filter 1/2/3/etc. individually (+/-for X & K) ..

If i could apply filter 3+ to K It'd tone down the noise a bit.

    - No need to +filter Ka here

I might even turn X back on if i could +filter3 it.

I sure don't want to get nailed on K but i don't see that i can do anything about this.

Anyways, in general i am still pretty happy w/the 695, i'm pondering the SE, I just wish i could dumb down K a bit. Individual filtering sure sounds nice..

The Filters are for encounters with other radar detectors that emit signals that can mimic K and Ka band for brief periods of time.

    Right.

Unless i'm mistaken, the filters add 100/200/300ms (1/2/3) delay to alarming.

This would help filter the cross walks & bus stops out of K.

But i don't need it applied to Ka.

Just K & +3 on X might be enough to turn it back on too.

The Filters are 10ths of a second.

Your issue sounds like seconds, not 200 milliseconds
