STI lastest version?

Hello everyone! I’m new to this forum and am going to buy a STI. Is there a way I can tell from the retail box what version the unit is? I am looking to get the latest update. I live in Ontario Canada, but I’m going to be in the US next week and plan on picking up a unit. Most likely from a retail electronics store. I was going to order from Roy, but I see he is out of stock again. Plus I’m worried about the unit being confiscated by customs. So once again can I tell the version from looking at the box and what is the latest version? Thanks in advance.

I believe you cannot tell from the box, you will have to see it when the unit starts up. Also people are saying that the STi is getting some new update therefore that is why Roy is not selling/not in stock right now.

I would wait and buy from Roy 8)

You cant tell the version by the box. You have to power it up while holding the vol and sensitivity buttons.

The latest interruption in production had to do with photo sens cell for the auto bright so it will have no impact on performance.

Why dont you get Roy to ship to a US address the go pick it up.

I wouldnt flaunt it in Customs face .... get rid of the fancy box and flatten the boxes put them in some junk in you trunkl

The retail electronic store you're probably talking about (CC?) doesn't usually carry them in-store. You're gonna have to pre-order and pick it up.

Also, don't worry about Customs, they don't confiscate detectors at the border. Detector ownership isn't illegal in Ontario, only having one in your car is. Even the use of a detector is legal, as long as its not in/on your car!! So, customs charge you applicable duty (0%) and PST+GST. This way, you can order from Roy, and be guaranteed you're getting the latest version.

I would prefer to order from Roy. I had planed to have him ship to a US address. Then I could also use the detector on my trip. However his site is showing STI back ordered till March 28th. Now just checking the actual Beltronics web site and they are saying STI back ordered as well. Also I was thinking of CC, and if they don’t stock the STI then they are of no help to me either. Perhaps I will just have to wait. Radarbuster.com says they will ship to Ontario. Just the part about me being responsible for the unit if confiscated got me thinking I might as well pick one up in person. I wish Roy had a store along I-75

Anyway so the latest version is the A4M9, with the “fixxed” photocell? Perhaps an A5 coming soon? I can wait a few more weeks I guess. But would really like one of these gems.

Currently using a V1. I’ve been “visible” for too long. Even if ever so slightly. Those night drives with no traffic can get worrisome. I’ve spotted too many Spectres in unmarked Crown Vics.

I will also be going through Cincinnati :!: So I may indeed have to look up the stores’ address and stop in. Unless I wait and get Roy to just ship me one. Plus he has a few other things I wouldn’t mind picking up.

Pics of the Spectre in car may be a possibly in the future. A few month ago I had a good opportunity. I was going into my local GM dealer and spotted an unmarked Crown Vic parked by the service dept. I think the officer was in there for his personal vehicle. Anyway I checked out the Spectre in car. However I didn’t have my digital camera on me

Dang... I also wish I had known the guy, I would like to do some of my own real world testing.

I want to mention the “leakage issue” as well. I’m not concerned at all. But for those that are. Could you not transmit, say white noise on that frequency? Scanner/transmitter range would be many km. Effectively jamming that frequency. As for giving away your location, well ya in perhaps a 2+km radius.

I should also mention that I’ve never had a problem being detected with my V1. But I don’t always have it on.

You could of course do that but you'd have to build a broadband jammer. Spectre can pick up quite a range of frequencies. Even if someone elected to try to build such a device using it would set off every radar detector around and of course it would be illegal. Just a few drawbacks.
