Default Beltronics 995 : falsing on LASER

    Hi all,

I have had the Beltronics 995 for almost 3 months now. I have been noticing that the LASER alert falses quite often and I am sure there's no LASER threat to be found. One thing I did notice is that whenever it falses it's either early in the morning on near dusk when the SUN is blinding at low angle (when I have to pull down the visor). It falses a few times continuously and then it would be quiet when I have made a turn.
Has anyone have similar experiences? I am thinking perhaps it has to do with the light's wavelength as it hits the radar detector at a precise angle before it goes off, and has nothing to do with LASER detecting.
    Any thoughts?

    Pete

I have the EXACT same problem with my 955. I decided to tape over the laser eye since laser detection is generally only good at telling you that you've been nailed.

Try installing the unit higher on the windshield, specifically, under the RVM. That will help. It will still do a good job of letting you know that you've been lasered.

I have had my V995 for about 3 months as well and have never had a laser false. I have mine mounted to the left of my RVM. And my work route takes me east in the morning and back west in the evening.

Hmmm.. I will give that a try. The only thing is that the cord will be more
in the way. I guess with the 995 I could disable LASER via the customized menu, but then I would be vulnerable... ;-(

    Thanks

BTW: I see posts about what version your 995 is. How do I tell and
can I get the firmware upgraded without having to send back to BELTRONICS? I actually called BELTRONICS and they told me to send it back to have them check it... but it's such a hassle.

I had exactly the same laser alerts from direct sunlight - driving home into the setting sun, it would go off 20 or 30 times on my hour commute, and was unusable.

I ended up turning it off in the menu, because even if I got a real alert, I'd ignore it now, just way way too frequent.

I moved it higher on the screen with no luck. I put it behind the tinted area, no luck (and not practicle in my car, I couldn't use the visors with it that high.

Very happy with the 995 other than the laser!

Remember, guys, there are several things that can set off a laser alert. There's a certain type of weather radar near most airports, laser range finders, laser adaptive cruise control, even some remote controls.

I get a fair number of LASER alerts on my Whistler, and usually, when I look, I can find a newer Toyota or something with laser cruise on it.

    solarispete,
Turn the unit off. Press and hold down, the brightness and mode buttons. Turn unit on and watch the display. It will tell you the revision. Also you can check the last two letters, numbers of your serial# on the bottom of the unit. It's either S7 or M4.

    Thanks for all your responses!
Seeing the replies, I think I will NOT send the unit back YET... It's still a new unit and I still have 8 months left in my warranty. I am glad to hear that someone else has the same problem when the sun hits at a certain angle, just as I suggested. I think maybe it has something to do with the sun hitting the car's hood at certain angle which throws it off.
I am debating to turn off LASER entirely...
Also, thanks for telling me how to get the firmware level of the unit.

Mine is none of these, for sure - it's definitely getting triggered by direct sunlight. I can be driving directly into the sun, and get repeated alerts - I can head around a curve and they stop, back into the sun and they start again.

No airports, no specific cars nearby - this can go on over 20 + miles, easily.

It sucks, but it's the way it is I guess - I've turned the laser off and it doesn't bother me anymore.
