Default STi Driver vs V1 in Jersey

    Ok,

I'm a current owner of an STi pre 33.8 fix. (Haven't sent it in yet). Living in NJ (shopping mall/strip mall capital of the world) my detector talks a lot....to combat this I use city mode.

Of course I realize city mode is less sesitive and I prefer Auto. However the chirping all day really gets annoying. Considering 90% is all false door openers.

I know the V1 is supposed to be a quiter RD. Would I be happier with the V1 vs the Sti in this situation?

    Thanks

The V1 makes more noise, actually. There are options in it for muting, I think you may interested in taking a look at the little-l option for the V1. It mutes all K-band signals below 4 bars of strength if I remember correctly.

Also G mode (is it correct, V1 guys?) mutes all rear-K-band detection.

If you live in NJ, then the 9500 is your best bet, you can lock out the real falses

The V1 is a million times more chatty in comparison to the STi. I have both. The V1 is one of the most chatty detectors on the market. You can program it to be less chatty, but it's still noisier than my STi.

With it's default settings (A mode) the V1 is chatty. Just a couple programming options in Little L mode (l) will reduce the noise by at least, or, much more than half.

    It's really a personal choice.

I picked a one dot strength X-Band IO hit on another car a mile away over a bridge with my V1. Would the STi pick it up? Doubtful, unless it was in Highway mode. And we all know how Highway mode works. It's comparable, in regards to chattyness, to the A mode with a V1. The best part is, is that I was in Little L mode, which is more quiet then most people claim it is.

Send your STi in for the update. My autoscan seems to me much quieter now after the update.

This is true. Autoscan, while not perfect is much quieter since I had the firmware flashed last month.

To be honest, from all the data I've read, there is not a big difference in performance between the STi and V1. So if you want to reduce the noise, I would recommend the 9500i over the V1 since you are a STi owner.

I quote myself from another thread and pasted it below,

Because I don't mind the noise at all, I went with the V1 as appose to the 9500i.

But after owning the V1 for almost a month, I caught myself not taking the V1 seriously due to falsing and almost got caught speeding with a I/O Ka hitting me after I got about three warnings. So there's a learning curve with these things.

I agree. The 9500i, STi and V1 are the best three dash/windshield mounted RDs currently available. All three offer performance which overall is very similar. I almost always use my 9500i whenever I take a trip to town or travel to Atlanta since it is amazingly quiet around town in Auto Sensitivity mode. I use my STi on longer road trips -- especially when I drive at night -- since it is completely undetectable, since I have custom dimmed its display so that only I can see it, and since I prefer its much less annoying audio alerts. I have been using both for several months now and I can't tell any noticeable difference in sensitivity. I love using both of them.

I agree with that MEM-TEK, but you would be surprised how many angry people tell me I'm crazy in dismissing other RD's like the X50 or RX65. Sigh, it is time to let go and accept that there are bigger boys in town when it comes to RD's.
