THE ONLY RADAR USED around my area is GOLDEN EAGLE 35.5 KA, im serious. Let me put it to you this way:

-State Troopers (VSP) only use 35.5 and use it exclusively.
-York uses only 35.5 ka (very few k units only new cops get them) and a ratio of 1(K):10(Ka) k band units at the least, probably like 1:15 as often times the cops that have 35.5 have it on hold and all the K band radars are either on C/O (most of the time) or sometimes hold but rarely.
-AND GLOUCESTER only uses 35.5, maybe 1:75 I'll get a K band radar though I havn't seen one in a long long time.

And those are the only counties I drive in, I go to NN maybe once in a month.

So believe me I know all to well about 35.5 and IT BLOWWWWSSS!!! haha.

I wish I lived in different counties and I would probably only have to encounter 35.5 with the State LEO's.

Plus the two counties I live in are rural except York Route 17 which is sub-urban none the less. I honestly have changed my driving to "as much highway as possible" instead of taking the back roads which are quicker and less mileage, also no stop lights.

This is just to gvive you an idea of what I have to deal with, I encounter at the LEAST 1 missed encounter a week. I get the alert when Im in visual of the cop lol. And the only reason I honestly have not gotten a ticket yet is that im either lucky and behind a stupid but lucky car or I run as most of the time Im speeding pretty bad (15 over). I can run and not have any problems usually as they love using Moving I/O and have to do a U turn, which though helps them a lot in terms of radar the medians that are often times hills or big dips disable them into turning around.

I'm actually in mid-stage of building 8 inch armrest deck for the Sti so the RD can positioned at the windshield level instead being 8inches in the hole on the armrest. I'll take some pictures when it's done. At least this way RD will sit above the dash level and have clear view of the windshield.
MK, believe me you should mount it on the Windshield as I've been using the STI on the windshield along with other detectors for a while. And no problems what so ever, they really unless your pulled over can't see it. And though I've left it up a few times and not a problem the ones were I was worried I pulled it down and still havn't had a problem.

Just trust me on the fact that you won't get caught if mounted properly. Honestly I will truly give you my word that if you do get a ticket for the RD on the windshield I will pay the ticket, I will honestly give you that word along with every other rd member on here seeing this post so I will risk my reputation. Your not going to get caught if you have it mounted high and use a little bit of creativity. At first I was just like you and worried like crazy but after a while and several experiences of "I thought he would have seen it" it hasn't happened yet so Im not worried.

And if my friend for 2 years can run a Cobra RD DEAD CENTER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WINDSHIELD, with OUT OF STATE PLATES (GA) and not get a ticket, you will be fine. He almost got pulled over recently because the state trooper had a RDD and his isn't immune but if a cop hasn't visually seen it yet you'll be fine.

Honestly trust me, I just gave you the word I will pay the 90 dollar ticket if you do get a ticket. Nobody in VA has yet to have a confirmed STI ticket. Nobody, their was one time of a speculation because of this new RDD but it was never confirmed and 1 in however many STI's are in VA is pretty redicoulous.

GL, and Listen to a fellow VA user! haha later bro

    YTCD,

You know I trust you bro. I will as instructed. I think I'm just having "Scarface" "Paranoid" syndrome.

The visor trick should more than enought to hide it properly during day time.

    Thanks dude.

And if you got the intial alert and it was at 6 bars then I'd be worried because it should be around 2 bars when you first get it. You want at least .5 miles of I/O detection and honestly thats not even enough. I look for a mile and want a detector that can pick up I/O 35.5 a mile away in all situations. Which the STI-R running *only* 35.5 is the only one even close to being able to fufill that.
YTCD, you were absolutely correct. I've mounted the sti on windshield and even the false alerts that I get from same location everyday were MUCH MUCH stronger than being on my armrest.

    Should listen my fello Virginian.

Haha yeah, no worries bro. C/O you wouldn't have to worry about that, but VSP use 35.5 I/O exclusivly and you should encounter it a lot, and thats what I was worried about as windshield mounted should do much better than an arm rest mount.

I really think windshield is much better suited, and I promise mounted high you won't get caught with a RD. Take pictures and I will let you know how to improve it, I have mine to where its not visible and it doesn't bother you at all like pushing the visor down does.

GL bro, send me a message with any question you want to know.

I was on I-80 last week at 02:30 am cruising along in Wyoming with very few cars on the road. I got two weak ka beeps of 34.707. To my amazement 7.9 miles later I saw a Highway patrol in the median facing me just as he shot me with instant on 34.707. Had he been sitting there the whole time? I could not confirm it but I feel he had been , and the terrain was really open with very light traffic.

Yeah, I deffinatly belive you. In the desert where they do SML, 9 mile pick ups are very capable of happening. Its about humidity and everything else. I think a cobra could pick up 35.5 maybe a mile in these situations lol.

No deffinatly what happened more than likely.

This is also another reason why V1's have ka ramp up sensitivity tuning options. So if you live in these areas you can tune it down to be accurate.

yea man, i'd suggest hardwiring it - its saved my ass 6 times in a 1 month period LOL my area its 50/50 K or KA band but 90% of the time they're using I/O, only ran into 2 C/O but visor mount is the way to go IMO - originally I had mine mounted right under the tint line on the upper half of the windshield (was hardwired with wires running up the side panels and into the roof)

It's great place to hide it because w/e I get out I just stuff the wires back into the roof. And you could either buy the visor kit or do like i did buy a black "visor organizer" for like $9 its good - has a mesh net were I put my STI, which is perfect because from the rear outside you cant read/see the display on the RD all to well.

I Don't know if it's me or my detector but it doesn't seem to be that sensitive. I read things like the ka alerts going off a mile in advance and whatnot. I drove by a vsp cruiser while he was pulling someone and left the radar on. I wasn't exactly keeping count, but there was no way it caught that around a mile in advance. Another time there was a vbpd cruiser shooting i/o and i my ka band alerted within a block or so within the me running into him. I might try to get some seat time in my buddies car to do some comparison tests. I've only had the thing for three days and imo it hasn't been everything that I would have pictured it to be. I can understand why the k-band and x-band door openers are reading so weakly, but I don't understand why it seems to be having difficulty picking up ka-band. Maybe there are factors that i'm not considering?
