Default Bel Sti Driver.. Amazing performance

As you know from my other post I have out, I'm still trying to hardwire the STi driver. I decided that I'm going work more on it on Friday. So I took the car out to meet up with some friends in Washington DC. Since it's illegal in Virginia, I didn't want to take a chance mounting it on dash yet so I decided to mount it on my arm rest for the heck of it. My armrest sits about 8 inches below from the dash level.

While I was route 66 doing about 75mph, the Sti started going off, alerting me "Ka band" I had the clear line of site of what was in front of me but there was no cops in site as far as I can see it but alert beeps got stronger as I continue driving. I also assume since alert stay on, I figure it was constant Ka. I couldn't see what ramp Sti was on since it's sitting on the armrest but when the alert got pretty strong, I saw VSP about 1/4 mile a head park on the left shoulder under a bypass. To my best estimation, I was first alerted at least 3 to 4 miles prior to my naked eye spotting VSP.

I'm shocked that it picked up such good alert sitting on my armrest instead of the dash. I really don't know what to make of this. If it's going to perform this well sitting on my armrest, I may not even want to hardwire it.

I'm not a virgin anymore. This is my first save.

P.S. Just like YCTD advised, I should of turned off X band before going into the city. I'm still novice to the RD world, while I wasn't even speeding, I think I probably stomped on my brakes like 10 times because of the false X-band alert. Live and learn.

Just so you know RD's are illegal in DC too, virginia is the only STATE it's illegal in, DC is a district, and that district has a ban on them as well

Thats some damm good performance, especially for your armrest. I've had 1... 4 mile detection and 2... 3 mile detections with several 2 mile and so detections. Yeah I did the same thing with X band when I first got mine as I wasn't use to the tones, laser was scary too I got an alert and I nearly s*** my pants as the alert was like nails on a chalkboard and I never heard it before. I don't think I've ever hit the brakes so hard lol. I was first going to say just for now leave X band on so you get use to the tone but thinking about it I would keep it off for a long long time until you travel to another state that uses it sometimes, that when your on the highway you'll act accordingly.

I sent a pm back last night, waiting for the reply

That's how I used to go to VA with the V1. I would plug it into the 12 volt supply in the center console and leave it there with the console lid open. When I got an alert I unplugged it and closed the console. Worked great since most of what I encountered was CO.

I've been driving around with Sti on my armrest for few weeks. Just yesterday, going into Manassas on route 28, I got an I/O full alert instantly. There were at least 6, 7 cars in front of me so I don't think I was the target. I was little worried about I/O since Sti being on the armrest with proper coverage but not anymore.

Even though Sti is hardwire, I feel much more comfortable being on my armrest since it's out of any viewing range from outside.

Overall, I am very impressed with Sti driver.

What was the range from the intial alert and where the cop was? You should be getting on ka 1 mile alerts easily especially on a straight road. C/O often times more than that. Full alert is a signal strength of 9, if you were in sight of the cop and it was a only 8 or less bars then I'd be worryied as often times I can't see the cop and i'm getting 9 bars.

And if you got the intial alert and it was at 6 bars then I'd be worried because it should be around 2 bars when you first get it. You want at least .5 miles of I/O detection and honestly thats not even enough. I look for a mile and want a detector that can pick up I/O 35.5 a mile away in all situations. Which the STI-R running *only* 35.5 is the only one even close to being able to fufill that.

    YTCD,

I couldn't tell you how many bars I had since STi was sitting on the arm rest. When the alert went off Ka, Leo was no where in my view ahead. I just thought it was a full alert because alert tone was like 3 continous tone.

I'm actually in mid-stage of building 8 inch armrest deck for the Sti so the RD can positioned at the windshield level instead being 8inches in the hole on the armrest. I'll take some pictures when it's done. At least this way RD will sit above the dash level and have clear view of the windshield.
